Bedside Cot help/opinions

First post - need some mumsnet wisdom! So MIL has generously offered to buy the cot. I had my heart set on the M/care Bedside one as I thought it would have the pros of co-sleeping without any of the possible dissadvantages. I haven't seen this cot (or any other bedside cot for that matter)in the flesh as none of the stores seem to have it on display. MIL calls this evening from John Lewis saying she's seen a bedside cot there and thinks it's not such a great idea as you would need to have the side on when the baby is sleeping during the day and this would mean shifting it to put the side back on etc etc Thinks a normal cot would be better as you could have the bars up to stop the baby rolling out - this kind of seems to defeat the purpose of having a bedside cot v confused now!

Putting the side back up on our bedside cot was very easy. I just made sure that I remembered to do it before putting DS down for his nap.

I got a global bedside cot. Not sure if they make them anymore but worth trying to find as the side slides over so can be slid back iyswim? We bought ours second hand as we wanted one so much and then bought a new mattress. Maybe someone will know of smething similar tho too.

Now ds is older (18 mth) I don't worry so much as the other side of our bed is against the wall too and he'd have to roll a long way to fall out anyway.

its up to you not mil. I co slept and still do with ds. If i had the choice again i would buy a beside cot. Have you tried looking on internet for pics?

I googled Mothercare bedside cot and you can see the picture. I like the idea of the 8 height positions so it can line up with the bed. We bought a cotbed and took one side off to push up to our bed but it wasn't the right height. We ended up co-sleeping anyway so didn't use the cot that much. I would consider the Mothercare one if we have another.

i had one, didnt put side up for naps, dd would have had to rolll across whole dbl bed to fall out, i had lowered the base so it was no longer level with the bed by the time she was that adventerous!

mine was cossatto, couldnt find global, i got the best deal at kiddicare but that was nearly two years ago.

dd is now in a toddler bed (next one due next month) and i also found it good to put side underneath in bedside mode with base very low to train her ready for not falling out of a big girl bed.

my sil has always just built her cots with three sides though and put it against her bed like that.

they still do global ones and toysrus do them. Just google bedside cot. And loads come up

We have a global bedside cot and it's fab! Unlike some of them the side can be removed (flipped round within the cot - hard to actually explain!) without needing to move the cot at all, even if it's crammed into a small space e.g. between your bed & a wall. This is difficult to describe but well worth a look. We got ours from kiddicare.com but was nearly 3 years ago. We're about to use it again for DC2 (due 2 dyas ago!).

Thanks all - I really appreciate your thoughts - and yes I know its not up to MIL - can back myself up with your experiences now (and failing that I just buy the damn thing myself - it's not worth the hassel!!)
Cheers!

We had a Mothcare bedside cot some 5.5 years ago, and it was great. The ot side just went up and over to the other side, out of the way - took seconds to sort out. We got on very well with the bedside cot and it really did help us out - we did cosleep as well, but it kind of merged the two together.

Just check that it fits up against your bed okay.

MrsFogi · 15/02/2008 21:56

We have a global bedside crib and I love it - side goes straight up and down so no need to move it.

lilyfire · 15/02/2008 23:07

yes I have a bedside cot and although my babies ended up co-sleeping a lot, actually in the bed,I would recommend it. I kept the side down until they could roll and get out and this was fine. Then put it down, but it was easy to move up and down. Mine was from John lewis.
