Fragmin daily

Hi ladies

ive been told I need to go on fragmin and take these injections daily until 6 weeks after birth. (I’m only 11+6 now).

my midwife has told me to just go to the antenatal clinic and ask reception to have a Dr sign off on the prescription and then collect the fragmin and start using asap.

my only concern is that there’s been no plan made around monitoring me on the injections and no discussion around how to actually use the injections and when to get the next lot.

I just seem to have been told to speak to reception and that’s it… is this normal as they’re not really anything to worry about? Or should I be going back to my midwife and pushing for more info? ..

any help is appreciated!!!

You should have some monitoring as long term use of blood thinners can have side effects. It's easy to do the jabbing yourself though once you get your first box and it should then be repeat prescription. Ask the midwife about what your GP might do in terms of monitoring.

They’re very easy to use, pinch an inch of fat on the side of your belly and stick it in. Don’t rub the area after as they can make you bruise anyway and rubbing it will make it worse.

I used them in both of my successful pregnancies from pretty much bfp to after delivering and haven’t had any issues at all. I’m still using them after my recent c section.

What are your particular worries? Happy to help if I can. It’s quite a common thing, lots of women are on them.

Make sure you get a sharps box. Your council should collect them when it’s full.

@AnneLovesGilbert Thank you so so much that’s so kind of you...

I think my biggest worry is whether baby will be okay while I’m using them and who will keep an eye on me as im on them for so long!!

the midwife scared me a bit, she said I need to start them asap but then said it’s fine to go down next week to get them after my 12 week scan on Thursday… so just feel a bit confused about how urgent it really is.. I don’t have a blood clot but had one 10 years ago which is why they want me to take them but now my mind is doing overtime about the what ifs!

it sounds ridiculous that im overthinking so much … this is my little miracle baby so im just a bit on edge about everything to be completely honest…

Similarly to you, I went to the hospital to collect my first script and although a midwife did my first injection, I expected a bit more in-depth info but was sent on my way.

Anyway.. as a previous poster has mentioned, it is easy to do and I must have done around 50/60 injections so far. (I started at 16ish weeks I think, but only because it wasn't flagged that I needed them right away) pinch a bit of skin push the needle in the whole way, I like to slowly push the injection in as I find it less stingy. The needle is designed to go in to your subcutaneous fat and doesn't go anywhere near baby.

Another tip from me.. it's much easier to inject into a well moisturised belly!

The highest risk time of pregnancy for clots are first trimester and last month of pregnancy/first month after pregnancy.
Your risk of a clot in pregnancy is 5 times higher than your risk when you're not pregnant so it's a really good idea to be on them if you have other risk factors like having had a previous clot.
Baby will be unaffected and the injections are safe in pregnancy.

@SouthwestSis Thanks. I think that’s a big concern for me is that the midwife has said it’s fine to leave it until next week to get the injections even though it seems pretty urgent… my worry is something happening between now and then as I’ve already spent most of my first trimester unaware and not using anything …

Hi, I had to inject everyday from 6 weeks in my pregnancy until 6 weeks after. No I'll effects and my daughter is 21 months now. Bit of a menace but totally healthy 😅.

A nurse at the hospital did show me how I needed to use them (just explained, didn't actually inject me) and that was that I was on my way. If you're feeling nervous or unsure maybe ask if someone could just quickly go through it with you. The first few I was really nervous about doing but you soon get used to them. Like others have said you need a good pinch of skin and put the needle in at an angle. Release it fairly slowly and don't rub after. Sometimes they do sting a bit but it's soon over.

Can't recall that I had any additional monitoring. I was on them because I have a blood clotting disorder and previous MC. Maybe it depends on why they've been recommended as to whether you need any closer monitoring? But the injections are deemed safe to use in pregnancy. If you're worried about leaving it too long then can you go get the prescription this week? I was told once pregnancy was considered viable I could start them which for me was after they'd done an early scan at 5/6 weeks to check baby was in womb etc

Thank you so much you have definitely put my mind at ease. Couldn’t get down there this week as all their consultants were busy so will have to go next week after a blood test they have scheduled for me but that’s only a few days away so just trying to think positive!
your advice has helped me so much so thank much. I’m so glad to hear your DC is healthy as can be that makes me feel tons better! … strangely I’m ok with the thought of having to inject just worried about the baby! First time mum so everything is a scare and a worry at the moment! Xx @FizzyFlamingo
