When to stop aspirin?

I'm on aspirin in pregnancy to prevent pre-eclampsia due to family history. 150mcg per day

Was told to stop at 36 weeks however the PE in my family occurred after delivery not before so I was nervous about stopping it and consultant said I could go to 39 weeks on it.

However I've been reading about links between aspirin use and PP haemorrhage and am very nervous about carrying on too long and thinking maybe I should try and reduce it.

Anyone have any insight or experience? I have asked consultants but they seem so relaxed about it all. I've got into a bit of a mindset of trying to manage all risk as I approach my due date as terrified something could go wrong.

I was on aspirin for both of my pregnancies and stopped at 36 weeks, I was also on Fragmin (a blood thinner) throughout due to a blood clotting disorder and continued the Fragmin for 6 weeks after delivery. Could you perhaps discuss the option of going on a blood thinner for a few weeks postpartum?

@CupidStunt24 and were you OK giving birth on a blood thinners? That's my main worry

I could ask but as I don't have any clotting disorders and PE was family not me, I'm not sure they'll take me seriously they just see me as low risk - I only saw consultant as I asked rest of the time its midwives

Yes it was fine, I had to give birth on a delivery suite as opposed to a birthing centre/midwife led unit, just so there were doctors on hand in case of haemorrhage. But both times the midwives just kept an eye on me for a little while and checked for any bleeding for a few hours before I was discharged. I've never had a blood clot, and my disorder is very mild. It's inherited from my dad, and he had a DVT and some PE'a and it was his history that jumped my risk factors up. Just the clotting disorder alone wasn't as much of an issue, but when I told them of his clots that's when the Fragmin was issued during/after pregnancy. It might be worth asking and see what they say. Fragmin is issued in lots of cases after standard operations (my DP has had a few knee operations and it has been given to him for 6 weeks after the procedure). Maybe just voice your concerns about the risk of developing a clot after the birth and see what they say. It's all such a bloody worry isn't it!

Yes so many things to consider! I'll definitely ask them again though to see what they think as dont like to leave it to chance

I'm not the OP, but just wanted to say thanks for sharing, as I have a clotting disorder as well. Did you deliver via section or vaginal birth?

CupidStunt24 · 19/04/2023 16:13

No problem @lexicodes! I had two vaginal births, no issues at all, just monitored for a couple of hours after delivery to ensure no abnormal bleeding. I have a protein C deficiency so more prone to clots, particularly in pregnancy.
