I want to give my baby both formula and breast milk, this is my first baby so I would like to try breast feeding but ideally I’d only like to be doing it at night and doing formula feeds during the day would that work??

Probably but not to begin with. You would need to do a few weeks of breastfeeding to build up suy then you may be able to drop feeds for formula however this might impact you night supply

To establish a supply we have to nurse. We only get like a tablespoon or 2 at first. It's not like a tap you can switch on and off.

Once your milk comes in, you might feel uncomfortable during the day. Maybe a pump.

But what you're suggesting probably means formula completely quite quickly if you want to do it from the off.

If I were you I'd feed on demand round the clock to get a really good supply. Once you have that established you have a bit more control over it and can replace certain feeds with formula. I mixed fed 3 kids that way.

I mix fed from day 1, and my supply at the start was great, but it dwindled the more bottles of formula I introduced. By 6 months it was so low there was no point breastfeeding anymore.

But mix feeding was great for me because it meant my partner could share feeds. We did one night on duty one night off duty from day 0. Brilliant.

If you have a hands on partner it might be worth mix feeding. But know that it will affect your supply. In the end do what suits you x

You would need to pump throughout the day to keep your supply up or it’s likely your milk would dry up. Babies tend to cluster feed in the first few weeks to build it up. IT’s recommended not to introduce a bottle for the first 6 weeks as it can cause nipple confusion

Some babies refuse to drink formula if they have been fed breast milk from the start (not all but it can happen). So it's advised to introduce formula gradually/ mixed with breast milk.
