You can get them from Amazon

Scotlasss · 15/04/2023 09:21

It’s really not recommended to use these at home!

Rockfordpeach · 15/04/2023 09:22

Please don't buy one, they are so dangerous. I think they should be banned

Unclefester007 · 15/04/2023 09:24

As Previous Posters have said please do not buy one of these! You have no idea how to use one ! They should only be used by people trained to use them and know what they are listening for !! Theh should be banned

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 15/04/2023 09:24

Don't use them. So dangerous to use these.

PickledScrump · 15/04/2023 10:20

Don’t use them!! There are really advised against. There’s been too many cases of mothers getting stressed because they can’t find the heartbeat or even worse, mothers feeling reassured by hearing a heartbeat when getting reduced movements, when they’re actually listening to their own and haven’t gone to hospital. Please don’t get one.

Even midwives don’t like using them, they only really get used so mothers can hear the heartbeat, but even they can struggle to find it at times

blahblahblah1654 · 15/04/2023 10:23

One of the first things my midwife said to me at my recent booking appointment was not to buy one (I didn't even bring it up). They're notoriously unreliable

Ghayx · 15/04/2023 12:34

I get what you’re all saying , I wouldn’t ever use it for reassurance if I thought something was wrong and would always get checked . I wouldn’t ever rely on that , cause I’ve heard similar stories myself !!
More for fun for me and my partner. Is there any other reason why they are dangerous ?

OP posts:
M340 · 15/04/2023 14:21

Because you wouldn't necessarily know that somethings wrong.
When babies have problems, you're not going necessarily know or feel any symptoms!!
You'll hear the heartbeat and have no way of telling whether it's yours or your babies.

Please don't get one. I think they're really irresponsible and dangerous. Sorry OP.

SheTheKing · 15/04/2023 14:23

Don't get one.
It's dangerous.

Get one of those teddies with the recording of babies heartbeat.
Don't use Dopplers. You will have no clue which heartbeat is yours or your child's. And you will have absolutely no idea something is wrong half the time as you won't get symptoms.

BringtheJury · 15/04/2023 14:26

You say it's just for fun, but what if you decide what you're hearing isn't right? These are not toys and dangerous in the hands of those not trained to use them.

DPotter · 15/04/2023 14:33

Dopplers aren't dangerous in the sense they harm the baby directly but and it's a big but they can cause a lot of anxiety for the parents if they are not trained in their use. Even if you don't intend to use it for re-assurance, you will naturally compare between scans and any differences which may be totally fine can be unsettling.

Put the money you would have spent on a doppler towards having a 3D scan

CremeEggsForBreakfast · 15/04/2023 14:40

As others have said, it won't harm the baby but what is the point when you don't know how to use it? You might think you hear the heartbeat but it could just as easily be your heartbeat or the blood rushing through the placenta.

You say you won't use it for reassurance but the very fact you think you heard the heartbeat yesterday could be the difference between you calling your midwife promptly when you haven't felt the usual pattern of movement.

bakewellbride · 15/04/2023 14:52

@CremeEggsForBreakfast exactly.

Op, You could experience false reassurance from it subconsciously.

It's just not worth the risk. Don't buy one, they are dangerous.

Ash9420 · 16/04/2023 15:15

As a doctor I would strongly advice you not to get this device not even in case of ‘just for fun’. This device should only ever be used by a trained professional even then they are not recommended.

This. I've told this story before but my son stopped moving at 31 weeks. I dithered all day about getting checked out because I thought I was overreacting, as soon as I got to the maternity unit to be checked they immediately found the heartbeat and I relaxed thinking that meant all was fine and I'd be sent home. In actual fact all was not fine, and he was delivered via emergency section within the hour. If I had used a home Doppler and heard the heartbeat at home, I wouldn't have felt worried enough to see a midwife. I was told repeatedly after he was born that if I had waited much longer, he wouldn't have survived. That's why I feel so strongly that they should not be available to buy

That is so scary! It doesn't bare thinking about what could have happened! Thank God you went in!
