ever since being pregnant mommy Gag reflex has become so sensitive that even sometimes brushing my teeth causes me to vomit or if i cough too hard I’ll vomit so I haven’t been able to remove this tonsil stone it’s my first ever tonsil stone I’ve had it about a month, it all started when I got strep throat about a month and a half ago I was sick for about a week then a week after that I noticed the tonsil stone, it said on Google they go away on their own so I left it (I did try and remove it with a Q tip and the back of my tooth brush but that made me vomit I tried gargling salt water and mouth wash too but that didn’t work) so I’m now sick again really bad tonsil pain in the affected tonsil which is radiating to my ear and a terribly runny nose, it gets worse at night and I already struggle to sleep please can someone advise me how to remove this tonsil stone

I had loads of tonsil stones when I was pregnant, but never again since! So weird, most went away on their own or got coughed out. I was the same as you, terrible gagging throughout pregnancy so I could never get it out myself. I would get some local anesthetic spray if you're allowed it in pregnancy, and hope it goes away on its own.

You could also try saltwater gargle although this made me sick 🙈

@TheRookie where can I get local anaesthetic spray? Never heard of it

Difflam spray from the pharmacy. Can you get someone to help remove it, I had to get DH to do mine.

You want Ultra Chloraseptic from Boots. It's great stuff!

I use an opened up kirbie grip to get rid of mine. I find that very effective.

Buy some little pipettes - you can get a massive pack on amazon cheap - fill it up with water and squirt it at the stone. It should knock it out of place.

Absolutely amazing, life changing. I used to suffer so badly with them and now I can get rid of them as soon as they appear without the days of gagging and awfulness.

Also, it's worth talking to your dentist and getting your gums checked. I get more tonsil stones when my gums are infected, and gum infection is common in pregnancy. I'm prone to it anyway because I have sensitive gums but I had no idea that was what was causing it.

I had chronic tonsillitis going through teacher training. Really feel for you.
Use a Qtip dipped in salt wated to poke gently at the skin just to the side of the stone. Think of it as extracting a gigantic blackhead. Nudging the skin should sort of squeeze it from the side. Use two Qtips if you really mean business. You might be left with a temporary hole in your tonsil, so try to swill / gargle if you can to keep it clean until it closes up.
Good luck.

you might need antibiotics- if you have pain like you say I’d be cautious and get it checked asap. Tonsils get easily infected by poking and you’ve got to give birth and all that that entails. You need energy and to be feeling good. I found tonsil stones miraculously cleared up with antibiotics. (Some doctors agree this works and some don’t, but I certainly saw the difference.)

This is so interesting. My gums were horrendous during pregnancy and after due to breastfeeding so I wonder if that's why I had tonsil stones so badly!

@BertieBotts i was at the dentist a couple of weeks ago but forgot to mention the tonsil stone my gums are ok tbh I think the stone was caused by the strep throat as I’ve never had a tonsil stone before and this one only came after the strep throat I’m going to try one last time to get it out tonight and tomorrow I will get the spray ppl mentioned and if that doesn’t work I will get the pippets

@BertieBotts ok i just tried but I couldn’t hold the Q tip long enough without triggering my gag reflex and the Q tip was also obstructing my view of the stone I figured the only way I could get in and out quick enough was to use my finger so I quickly scraped at the stone and got the top part off but inside the hole there is more that won’t come up and u can only see the rest when I sort of tense my tonsil seems pretty deep in there

I can never seem to dislodge mine as I can't get any implement to them to knock them out without triggering my gag reflex. I have found however with a lot of deep breathing I can get anbesol onto them on the tip of my finger. That at least alleviates some of the pain as well as being an antiseptic. They are horrible things and I feel your pain. Covid has left me with an enlarged tonsil which is now prone to the damn things. I do frequently need antibiotics to get rid of mine so if you are struggling try seeing a GP.
