Barry's / HIIT exercise in the first trimester

Hello!

I found out less than a week ago that I'm pregnant! Current 4 weeks and 2 days pregnant.

I have been doing HIIT exercising at Barry's for the last 5 odd months, about 2 or 3 times a week. While I feel mild cramping , I'm keen to stay fit and healthy and want to get back to the class, even if only once a week and I take it obviously a bit slower.

Has anyone continued HIIT exercising through their first trimester? On googling it, there's a lot of stories of professional trainers who kept at it, but not normal us!

Let me know please!!

Joe Wicks has pregnancy HIIT workouts on his YouTube channel that might be worth a look?

I don't know what Barry's is.

Exercise is fine. The nausea will kick in soon.

No idea what Barry’s is but I carried on going to the gym and taking classes throughout all my pregnancies, until I didn’t feel I could manage it any more (around the 8 month mark, when I switched to yoga).

💯- I did Barry's bootcamp and ran a half marathon while pregnant. Exercised until 30 weeks pregnant at which point I was exhausted and stuck to walking and Pilates.

Skyla01 · 13/04/2023 20:43

I think it's safe to keep doing the same exercise if your body is used to it. After first trimester I would be careful of core exercises though, some aren't recommended in pregnancy. I hope you don't get bad sickness / tiredness and can continue!

Thanks so much ladies!! I needed to hear from some real women and not just another article online.

Barry's is a HIIT workout class (in London and Manchester) which is known for its intensity - each class is half strength training with weights on the floor and half running different sprints on the treadmill.

Remember you aren't ill. People still pay for abortions, so if it was that easy to harm the baby via the exercise....

Hello, Ive been advised I can carry on doing anything I was doing before getting pregnant up until 12 weeks when I’ll need to modify exercises for example incline bench press to avoid lying flat and no burpees etc but obviously listen to your body and stop if anything doesn’t feel right.
I go to a gym similar in style to Barry’s, we’ve loads of pregnant members who keep going right through their pregnancies with modified exercises as needed. I’d speak to your instructor and I’m sure if there’s anything they wouldn’t recommend they will provide an alternative 😊

Hey! Congratulations!

I went for a class or two after, but was on the treadmill much slower to keep my breathing levelled + no bicycle crunches (Barry's favourite !), etc. so felt like I was wasting money going ! Ended up using the Sweat pre-pregnancy program instead & happy with that.

@Poppypear if you tell them you're pregnant, I'm pretty sure they'll refund the money or put a long hold on the classes. You definitely won't lose the money x

You might want to instead spend the money on a personal trainer during pregnancy. They can ramp down with you as individual and adjust safely as you feel. You can also do lots of stuff specifically for preparing for birth.

The cost of Barry’s 3x a week will probably translate to 1-2 personal training sessions a week. You can do the same routine on the 3rd day yourself or do your cardio then?

Hello,

Congratulations on your pregnancy, hope it’s going well so far! I replied to this last year when I had just found out I was pregnant. I actually carried on training throughout my pregnancy, my partner is a PT and I spoke to the GP, my consultant and midwives too plus did my own research. After 12 weeks I adapted exercises so I was never laying flat on my back or on my stomach (for example no burpees). I did a Hyrox event at 7 weeks and an Ultramarathon at 13 weeks as I’ve always done these things previously. I reduced the long distance running after about 22/23 weeks as it wasn’t as comfortable but continued the HIIT classes but if I ever felt something wasn’t right I just didn’t do it. I definitely think exercising helped with my recovery after birth, I ended up having an emergency C section (unrelated to exercise!) however I had a very good recovery and was back at the gym as soon as I’d had my 6 check which really helped me feel like me again after a traumatic birth.
It all depends on what you’re used to doing and what you feel comfortable with and just listen to your body ☺️

JRTfan · 25/01/2024 19:08

I would see how you feel as pregnancy affects people in different ways. I assumed I would feel unwell/tired but had zero symptoms I'm nearly 19 weeks now and apart from a growing bump still no symptoms! But some people really suffer it seems to be a real lottery.
I did however struggle with running from the beginning but was only doing a couple of 5k per week before so have adapted what I do. I now make sure I have a brisk long walk every day and have just started swimming and do a couple of pregnancy friendly Hiit classes a week.
Your body will tell you what is too much just make sure you listen and don't push yourself too hard.
