Hello

im so sorry to create yet another thread but just can’t seem to find anyone describing this experience.

I am 37 weeks and about once a day or every couple of days I feel baby almost knock on my stomach in quick succession. Like a rabbit thumping it’s foot quickly 5 times or someone knocking on a door. Please can someone tell me this has happened to them and didn’t turn out to be some form of seizure?

im struggling a bit with anxiety as baby is breech so it’s very likely my birth plan will totally pivot to a caesarean, but this worry feels quite separate and I can’t shake the concern.

thanks in advance x

Is it a really sharp pain in your crotch ? If so have a Google of lighting crotch. It's the worst.

Keep a eye on kicks and always call triage to report any changes in movement (whether it be more movements than usual or less)

PurBal · 08/04/2023 06:59

Babies make weird movements. I wouldn’t worry about them personally. Has there been a change to the pattern? If so it may be worth contacting the midwife.

All babies are different so no one’s experience will be identical. Currently pregnant with DC2. DC1 hiccuped A LOT. DC2 has never hiccuped but seems to do HUGE barrel rolls and kicks me in the side so much he wakes me up (didn’t happen in my first pregnancy). It can be painful.

If your baby's pattern of movements has changed (not just if there are more or less, but any other changes too), get checked out.

Rooandtwo · 08/04/2023 07:23

Thank you for your replies. It’s not really a change in movements, in general they’re the same. But these are also definitely not hiccups which I also feel though less frequently now. It just seems so unique. I know there are so many strange movements that can be normal but this just seems really odd. I also think baby being breech has thrown me and has me worried something else could be wrong.

My daughter did the 'quick thumper' movements. She was a big baby, and was just wriggling/stuck so moved to get comfortable in limited space. She also has hiccups a ridiculous amount. She is now a healthy 4.5M old :)

Like other posters said, if movements have changed and you're anxious, call your local mat unit today (now), state the movements are changed/strange for what you're used to, and you need a reassurance check. They will see you and pop you on the monitor.

Mine did this! She carried on doing it for a week or so when she was born so I was able to discover what it was. When she was asleep she would do 3 big elbow jerks. Nothing to worry about I'm sure.

If you're worried, get checked. I can't stress that enough. The midwives would rather see 100 women where nothing was wrong than not see the one who really did need to be seen.

Rooandtwo · 08/04/2023 08:39

Thank you. I’ve been in for movements before, and I would call if I felt that was needed. Ultimately this particular thing doesn’t happen frequently enough that I would expect them to see it whilst being monitored. I might mention it to the midwife when I next speak to her.

Sounds normal to me! Mine does it quite frequently, and I think the last one did too.

carnaval · 08/04/2023 09:01

Could it be hiccups?

Rooandtwo · 08/04/2023 09:05

Good to hear some other people think they have felt similar. Definitely not hiccups though as I feel this clearly and they’ll last several minutes, this is literally rhythmic kicking for a few seconds that’s it.

My second was just like this and it freaked me out. Especially when she did it then went really still. She’s one now 😄

BelleSauvage9 · 08/04/2023 09:33

I'm 32 weeks and had this a few times as well. No idea what he's doing in there (!) but I've not felt too worried by it as he moves 'normally' most of the time. I'm sure all is okay but of course, as others have said, get checked if worried 👍

Almie · 08/04/2023 11:58

My first did this a lot, as well as lots of episodes of what felt like shuddering. I was also really worried about seizures. I asked the midwives many times, and they didn't really know what to say - but please don't let that put you off asking your own midwives as it's always better safe than sorry.

When my son was born, he was quite shaky. The doctors weren't worried, and over the first two weeks it subsided and now he's a happy healthy 1 year old Smile

I'm currently very near my due date with my second baby, and she is also making lots of crazy movements lately. The midwives aren't worried, and I'm not worried this time either Smile

So to conclude, I guess my point is you should mention it to a midwife or doctor but just please don't stress yourself out about it as it's probably nothing to worry about!
