NIPT worries

So I'm 38 and got my combined screenings results back.
1:47,516 for Edwards / Patau so that's low chance
But I did get 1:103 for Downs so it's classified as High.

I'm not sure what my Hcg levels are but the Papp-a is 0.87 And the Nt is 2.5mm which I understand is both ok.

So I'm just unsure as to what has caused the high reading for DS. I've had the NIPT but don't get results till next week. Which seems like ages to wait, and all I do is google which isn't healthy I know but it's all I can think about.

Has anyone else experienced similar results?

It's probably your age.

I was 37 and got 1:150 and my midwife just said it's my age which bought it down. Based on age alone the risk factor was 1:199 so at 38 would be a bit higher than that.

I did the NIPT. Are you doing it through NHS? I had my blood done on a Thursday and the results came back the following Tuesday so hopefully yours will come back quickly.

1:103 is less than a 1% chance of the baby having DS if that reassures you any?

Capricornsarah · 06/04/2023 11:47

Yeah it's via the NHS they said it would be Tuesday because of the holiday weekend. I know it's not too long to wait. I suppose just super nervous of the outcome

It's age related, I am 42 and I don't even know my numbers, just got letter lower risk but I was told for my age lower risk is anything 1:150 and above. So when you think about it it's still much higher risk than if I was let's say 30 and numbers would be in thousands. However if they stated you are higher risk they do follow up NIPT and you will get peace of mind. Really high risks are like 1 in 4 etc. Do t worry too much ahead, im sure it will all be fine.

I agree with pp that your age is a big factor. I live abroad and our insurance only covers NIPT if your combined screening shows high risk. By default, any woman over 35 will qualify for it. Try to step away from Google (easier said than done I know!).

I’m 37 and will turn 38 the same week the baby is born, and I got a 1 in 35 risk of Down’s. Our NT was fine but PAPP-A is low, so we did the test on the Friday and got the results on the Tuesday. And everything is fine, our midwife was clear it was mostly my age that the probability was based on.

I hope you manage to fill your weekend with pleasant things to distract yourself until you get your results.

Thanks everyone fingers crossed it just an age thing xx

Hi guys first time mum here and super nervous.
Had my 12 week scan which was amazing - baby NT measuring at 2.5m which they said was absolutely fine. Did the combined test and got a phone call 2 days later saying there was an increase risk of DS but low risk of Edwards. She said it was 1:90 and this could be due to the HCG levels and PAPP blood work.

background info
Im 27 , first baby , NT : 2.5mm , HCG 1.56 and PAPP 0.49.

I’ve been feeling anxious and worried - I can’t eat or sleep and have been crying constantly. We’ve done the NIPT on the NHS but now due to the bank holiday it’ll take a while.

Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

I had a high result with DS 1:16
I was 27, normal bmi and everything else normal.
Had nipt private and came back that DS wasn't Down syndrome.
Good luck with yours x

@Khana95 I'm in a similar boat. Standard blood tests plus my age puts our baby as 1/22 for downs. We did coincidentally happened to have a specialist scan (as I'm under a recurrent miscarriage clinic) by a fetal medicine doctor and he checked the 5 Down's syndrome markers on scans and they were all fine, so that was reassuring. I was hoping to get my NIPT results on Friday, but they didn't come through. Hoping for Tuesday morning. I'm 40 so I think age is a big factor. Good luck

seven201 · 03/05/2023 10:11

My NIPT has come back with not enough DNA in the sample, including the second tube they tested so got to have more bloods then wait again.

Capricornsarah · 03/05/2023 13:26

When I was waiting for my results I spoke with ARC the charity, the Lady was very calming and full of good information. I appreciate that's it's really stressful I was in the same position a few weeks ago. But stay strong possibly give them a call and discuss the results you do have with them. X

Sorry to hear that, Hopefully it all goes well. I’m still waiting for my results and it’s killing me.

Could I ask what your BHCG , PAPPA and NT were ?

Capricornsarah · 03/05/2023 16:38

It's all above in the first post on the thread x

@Capricornsarah thank you. I'm going with the this isn't yet a definite problem so I'm not doing much research, but will do if I need to.

@Khana95 here are my nhs blood tests (which I got today) which show the risk as 1/55. "The blood test measures two hormone levels in the blood. We would expect these hormone as an average of 1 MoM. One of these was higher than this – BhCG 2.21 MoMs and one lower – PAPPA 0.45 MoMs. Sometimes pregnancies affected with one of the three conditions can present with hormone variations like this but they may also just be a normal variant for your pregnancy. ". I don't have my other clinic results to hand. I'm a bit confused as my results got worse (HCG rose and Pappa lowered) since the private clinic one but this result is slightly lower risk. I regret comparing the results to be honest! It probably doesn't make any difference and I have no idea how it works really. I'm going to try and stay away from Google.

Khana95 · 04/05/2023 16:44

Hi everyone,

just thought I’d give a quick update, got my NIPT results back and thankfully they came back as low risk for all!

Hrodge · 28/08/2023 11:33

Has anyone had these ‘higher risk’ screening results come back and then low risk NIPT and then gone on to have baby with a chromasomal abnormality? I have Papp-A slightly low at 0.84 and beta-HCG massively raised at 8.23 and NT 1.4, nasal bone there on the ultrasound and I’m 33. My combined risk was at 1 in 102 so less than 1% but still qualified for further testing.. waiting for NIPT and so unsure whether I should have gone amnio to know for sure…
