Travel Insurance Late Stage Pregnancy?

Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a good travel insurance provider for late stage pregnancy? I'm likely to need to be overseas (nearby ish!) from 36w -37w and most providers only seem to cover you up to 36 weeks.

Doubt you will find anyone. When you say near-ish in terms of overseas how are you planning to get back if you need to because no airline will transport you either. Is this trip really necessary?

I don't think you will find an insurer to cover you post 36 weeks. Neither will you find a doctor or midwife to give you a fit to fly certificate.(If you were considering flying). The risks are just too great.
I am sorry. Is there any way you can change things re the travel?

Betsyboo87 · 05/04/2023 19:18

How are you travelling? You can’t fly anywhere at that point even with a Drs certificate. Ok n that basis I would be surprised if there is a travel insurance that would cover you. They would definitely want a Drs certificate for cover and no Dr is going to say that your baby isn’t going arrive in that window. What is so important?

It will be northern Europe so plan to drive and get the ferry there and back. Travelling due to a serious illness in the family unfortunately.

You’re unlikely to get any- 37w is considered full term which is probably why that’s when Insurers have their cut-off rather than any later.

You also have to be careful with the policy wordings as “the 36th week of pregnancy” would be considered any point from 35w. There was a poster on here who got stung with that when trying to board a cruise just before what she thought was the cut off. So even if you got your skates on you might not be covered.

How long is the ferry trip? I’m doing a 12hr one tonight at 33w and my consultant was actually warning me not to go if anything was in the least bit amiss on the basis, “they can’t stop the boat for you”.

I’m sorry, I’m sure this is really stressful for you.

I think sadly you may have to accept that you cannot travel to see this family member. It sounds as if you are not yet at the cut-off point for travel though so maybe travel now while you may still get cover?

Did you ever get a travel insurance provider that covered you. I'm currently in the same position.

Are you looking at flying or the ferry? How far along are you?

OhwhyOY · 19/01/2024 19:43

@Emma19821 no I ended up not being able to go which was not ideal. There may be a provider out there but I didn't find one. Good luck with your search!

I'm flying I'd be 33 weeks at time of travel

Depending on the airline you might be ok to fly at least, remember 33 weeks you're actually in your 34th week of pregnancy so check the airline specific rules about what doctors note or fit to fly letter you'll need as well.

OhwhyOY · 20/01/2024 21:32

@Emma19821 there were a few providers that covered up to 36w I think, I can't recall who but definitely think you could find one if it's for less than 3w you're going for.

Hi there, I am trying to find travel insurance that will cover me at 34 weeks. Does anyone know an insurer that will cover?

Flying, driving or cruise? If flying, which airline?

JeThompson · 08/05/2024 17:12

Flying with Ryan air - aware I’ll need a fit to fly in order to go :)

Travel isn't permitted after your 36th week of pregnancy, but that actually means anything past 35 weeks as we know it. So 35+1 for example is your 36th week of pregnancy. Just checking you'll have flown home by 35+6? If not, you'll not find anyone to give you travel insurance (or you won't be able to claim) because you'd have flown against their rules.

JeThompson · 08/05/2024 19:21

Yeah I’ll be 33 weeks and 6 days on the date of my return flight (so my 24th week) :)

NutsAndMay · 08/05/2024 20:43

@JeThompson I have the same question! Though will be 32 weeks when flying. I’ve not found any insurance that covers as far as OP suggested, it all defines 32 weeks as normal birth and I don’t know what would be covered for baby after that. Not sure whether to go…
