When did you book your elective CS?

I’ll be 32 weeks when I see the obstetrician (I’m from England). I previously raised this with a midwife and it has been agreed, but nothing has been booked yet. This is my first baby. Is it normal to be seen so late by an obstetrician?

I think around 35 weeks and that was when I was booking to have the C-section at 37 weeks.

Thank you! I wasn’t sure if this was normal or not. Was the CS booked for when you were 37 weeks due to health reasons?

My appointment was at 32 weeks, and we were booked for 36 weeks (twins, only one placenta between them so had to be early). Not that we made it that far, but the point is that it's plenty of time to organise it. They do them every working day, it's a very normal thing for them.

Yes, anxiety.

34and3 · 04/04/2023 17:43

At 16 weeks. I was consultant led throughout

MrsBunnyEars · 04/04/2023 17:48

I’ve been consultant led throughout this pregnancy, and got a date at about 32 weeks (for 39 weeks).

I have another appointment at 36 weeks where they’ll check whether it needs to come forwards.

Torrennce · 04/04/2023 17:52

I had mine booked 2 weeks before my date which was 39 weeks

gjkufbb · 04/04/2023 17:56

Sorry this isn't the answer to your question but I'm thinking about asking for an elective c section. I'm currently 29 weeks and in England also. Did you find they were reluctant to give you one or was it an easy process?

biscuitcat · 04/04/2023 18:01

I had my consultant appointment at 34 weeks and got my date (for 39 weeks) a few days later.

@gjkufbb mine was no trouble at all - I turned down the appointment at the birth choices clinic (second birth so they wanted to talk about VBAC vs ELCS) and had no bother about that either. I think it's Birthrights who rate every hospital as red/amber/green on how well they adhere to the NICE guidelines of offering maternal request c sections, that could be worth looking at.

It was very easy. I told my midwife what happened to my mum and she didn’t blame me for wanting an elective CS. What my mum went through was horrific. I’m currently 26 weeks.

my last 2 were booked at my 12 week scan appt.
My 2nd elective was booked at 36 weeks so it’s completely normal.

It should be an easy process. I knew before getting pregnant that I would have one and it was already agreed. We just weren’t sure what gestation I would be looking at and at my hospital they don’t like to book them too far in advance because babies are unpredictable.

gjkufbb · 04/04/2023 18:13

Amazing thanks for all the info!

Awrite · 04/04/2023 18:18

I was consultant led both times. However, I gave birth in 2 different hospital/health boards. With no1, I knew the date from very early on. With no 2 it was much later, which stressed me out.

In short, it varies by health board.

arapunzel · 04/04/2023 19:28

I saw consultant at 32 weeks, discussed my reasons to why I wanted an elective - 1st birth took 5 days, wasn’t listened to by midwife - and section booked there and then for 39 weeks.

As it is I’ll have to have a section anyway as baby is breech.

PregnantQuestions · 04/04/2023 21:23

Thanks everyone! It’ll be good to get a date so I can prepare. Do elective caesareans only take place on weekdays or can they be weekends too? It’s just that I’ll be 39 weeks on a Saturday.

Usually weekdays IME. They will probably book you for the following Monday so 39+2. As it’s not for a medical reason, it doesn’t need to be 39.

Sparklesocks · 04/04/2023 21:36

Mine was booked in at 36 weeks for 39+1. I’ve chosen to have one due to my gestational diabetes, there are just quite a lot more variables and higher risk of shoulder dystocia. Obestrician booked it for me but did flag the c section risks are somewhat higher as I have a higher bmi, but they just want to be sure you I was aware of the risks before they booked me in. Midwife very supportive.

HiImTheProblemItsMe · 04/04/2023 21:45

I was booked at 36 weeks both tines. I'd assume you'll be booked for the Monday- I was 39 weeks on the Friday both times but they reserve that day to catch up on any postponed electives from earlier in the week at my hospital, so I had mine at 39+3 both times. Also I didn't get the confirmed date and time at 36 w - I had to wait until the week before when I was contacted by the hospital and given a specific slot.

sjmco · 05/04/2023 07:06

Mine won't get booked until 38 weeks for the week after.... my second was booked at 16 weeks for 39 week section.

babynoname22 · 05/04/2023 07:16

Think it's quite normal if it's normal if it's an elective via choice rather than 'medical need' to book quite late (36/37 weeks) in the hope you would maybe change your mind.

I had ELCS due to previous birth trauma. Was consultant led from 16 weeks. Decision finically made ELCS 28 weeks. Date booked at 34 weeks (but they were going to deliver at 36 weeks due to restricted growth in the end it was 36+4 due to slots available)

Good look with it. Mine was an absolute dream in comparisons to my vaginal delivery.

babynoname22 · 05/04/2023 07:18

My trust it week days only for ELCS. 39 weeks on Saturday with no date yet is late!

She’s currently only 26 weeks. She’s got an appt at 36 weeks to book the CS for 39 weeks.

RainbowPhilosophy · 05/04/2023 13:51

I've been told they won't book mine until around 36 weeks (currently 33+2) and it has been agreed from my very first appointment that I wanted an ELCS. It was for medical reasons but even more have presented themselves since (GD, worries about pre-eclampsia) and baby is still breech and has dropped from 35th to 3rd centile. I have another scan next week to see how she's doing and I'm hoping for an indication of whether she needs to be earlier than the 38/39 weeks they had previously said or not.

rach971 · 05/04/2023 18:26

I'm having an elective and I'm 23 weeks. Nothing has even been mentioned as to when I'll get a date, but I know from other posts I've read it's not likely to be until much nearer the time. I have a joint obstetrician and cardiologist appointment in the next couple weeks though so I might ask then just so I have a better idea of time frame
