Low lying posterior placenta (20 weeks)

Hi all, looking for similar experiences or reassurance really, I'm a bit of a mess.

I had my 20 week scan yesterday and baby is developing well and they don't have any issues with his progress. However they have noted my placenta has implanted on the back wall and is touching the exit, but not covering it. They've scheduled me for another scan at 28 weeks to check if it has moved.

I'm on pelvic bed rest and told to go in if I have any bleeding. I've been googling all night and I'm terrified. It seems less likely a posterior placenta will naturally move out of the way, just wondering if anyone has had theirs move naturally? I was really hoping to try give birth vaginally but if it doesn't move I'm going to have a c-section. I'm just scared as I really don't want to deliver him too early, scared I'm going to lose him and just scared I'm going to bleed etc.

Sorry I'm a bit all over the place. Thank you.

I had one with baby two. It moved out of the way before he came.

Oh and he had to be encouraged out with an induction at 42 weeks.

Are you in bed rest for something else?

I found getting a book I really trusted for pregnancy helped keep me off the doctor Google. Mine was Shelia Kitzinger but she is a bit old school.

I also had one. Was rescanned at 32 weeks and had moved. They move in something like 90% of cases. Didn't need to be on bed rest...

Hello OP

I had the same at my 20 week scan, I just had a scan last week at 31 weeks and it's the same.

I've got to go back in 4 weeks and if the same, they will schedule a c section.

My consultant who saw me right after the scan told me that he's not worried over haemorrhage at this point as it's still to the right and only just above my cervix, it's not covering my cervix completely.

I've had no bleeding at all and just had some advice after 20 week scan to not lift anything too heavy.

They said if I have any bleeding to go in straight away so they can assess but so far so good.

I know it's stressful and worrying but they know about it, they are keeping their eye on it and if they were extremely worried they'd put you on bed rest/pelvic rest.

Sending you lots of love and positive vibes, try not to overthink it if you can. They deal with this all the time ♥️

I was the same at 20 weeks, had moved by 28. They said the worst that would happen would be a c section which I was having anyway...but i remember I was super worried. Try not to be, it really does move most of the time and there's always a solution if not. Most important thing is baby is healthy and growing well. Congratulations x

Thank you! No, the midwife yesterday just said I'm on pelvic bed rest (no lifting, prolonged standing / walking or sex) until 28 weeks where they'll see if placenta has moved.

That's a relief, thank you! Yeah the midwife yesterday just said pelvic bed rest (no lifting, prolonged standing / walking or sex) until they confirm whether placenta has moved at the next scan and to keep an eye for any bleeding.

Hi OP any update , did it move up? Lookint for positive as in same boat now at 20 week

Mulner88 · 20/07/2023 07:20

I had a low lying placenta at 20 week scan also- mine was also posterior and was reading that posterior was harder to move up. Had a scan at 34 weeks to check and it had moved up and no further concerns. Likelihood is that it'll move back up so try not to worry xx

Hi! So sorry I’ve just seen this.

Placenta moved and I had a vaginal birth that went smoothly! X
