My firstborn is 3 and still breastfeeding. I haven't entirely decided when/whether I want to wean him completely, though I was already getting him used to sometimes not having a feed at bedtime etc. I'm not absolutely opposed to tandem feeding, but I was leaning against it.

However, I'm also finding my nipples get VERY sore when he's feeding, and I don't think I'm making much. I didn't get sore breasts last pregnancy and they aren't sore now, they just hurt when he's latched. I'm around 5 weeks. I know the milk can dry up for some women, but does it happen this early? He has a cough right now and I really wanted to let him keep going for at least until we've determined viability.

Mine were sore first trimester then it eased off, currently 39 weeks and sore again. Toddler has fed throughout - supply definitely dipped about 20 weeks, then came back as colostrum in third trimester.

I found my nipples got sore and it started to feel just horrible from quite early in pregnancy. I had a scan at 7 weeks to see if there was a heartbeat, and then reduced feeds to 12 weeks when I stopped.

What was wrong with @TomatoFrog 's reply? I read it last night - nothing struck me as off.

I'm only about 3 weeks ahead of. I don't think my supply has changed that I've noticed. Not had much soreness yet either.

I suspect that at age 3 if he gets less he'll just have more breakfast, so not an issue if supply drops a bit? I assume it's for comfort rather than nutrition (mine are 2.5 and take very little now, eldest weaned between 2.5 and 3 with no fuss)

I was told NEVER to breastfeed whilst pregnant as it can induce a miscarriage or early labour

My consultant told me that

TinyTeacher · 04/04/2023 17:24

@SchoolTripDrama many, many women breastfeed throughout pregnancy and tandem feed.

The advice that is usually given is that you can continue if you have a normal, low risk pregnancy. The main reason women are advised to wean is usually that it is extra demand on your body/mineral levels. That's not hugely significant if it's only the odd feed.

Many consultants are experts on delivery etc. But they rarely have any training on breastfeeding because it isn't something they advise on.

It is true that nipple stimulation can cause contractions towards the end of pregnancy. If you are at risk of early delivery for any reason, you are therefore advised to wean before third trimester. But the majority of women that breastfeed through pregnancy do so totally safely.

(Personally, I'm planning on weaning soon and definitely not tandem feeding. I have twins and don't like the idea of being fought over as I don't have enough nipples!!!!)
