8 week scan - pregnancy sac wrong size for baby

Hello, I just had an 8 week scan to reassure me because last year I had a miscarriage. Not that it has done any good because they told me the baby is only the size for 6 weeks, while the pregnancy sac it is in is the size for 8 weeks. Apparently the discrepancy is not good but the nurse didn't really say anything else, she just seemed a bit confused by it all.
Did anyone else have this? I am really worried, they did see a heartbeat but the sizes just don't match and I am convinced I should be 8 weeks, I had a positive pregnancy test before 4 weeks, when if the baby is only 6 weeks it would barely have been conceived then so the test shouldn't have been positive (confusing I know, hope you got that!)
I've got to go for another scan in two weeks - more waiting. Any thoughts really appreciated xx

Kitpusss - I can understand why you are worried, I was in a very similar situation a few months back - I'm now 16 weeks. I conceived and tested positive at 3 weeks pregnant but because I don't have periods I had no idea when I conceived really. I had an early bleed and my first scan - just before christmas showed no fetal poles/heartbeat, just a sac which they estimated was five weeks. I thought I was at least seven weeks so assumed the worst. Two weeks later I had another scan and was found to be nine and a half weeks

Honestly at this stage the growth is erratic. My baby suddenly grew at 10 weeks and was measuring 15 weeks then and hasn't really grown much since but is still developing normally.

They haven't read the books you see, they don't do what they are 'supposed' to.

I know you will be worried but your baby is still handing in there and the fact that you've seen a heartbeat is great - your chances of miscarriage do drop once a heartbeat has been detected.

Take it a day at a time, nothing you do will make a difference anyway but I think you will be fine

Thanks so much for your message, only one post but it was very helpful, and made me feel so much better.
The nurse had told me that babies always grow at the same rate at this stage, so my baby could not possibly be small for it's age. Your experience shows that this is obviously not the case, so I felt quite reassured.

Having said that, I've had some bleeding today, a bit of proper red blood which made the panic begin again, I'm hoping I'll be able to get another scan tomorrow. Pregnancy really is a merry-go-round isn't it?

kitpuss - good luck for tomorrow

Sorry I don't want to really post this but thought you should know my experience, I had a scan at 8 weeks and baby measured 6 but no heartbeat, sac measured 8 weeks though. I got told to wait a week for a rescan but it was the same thing , scan had grown a little bit baby no so it was a miscarriage.

I think 2 weeks is too long for you to wait a week is long enough to see if the baby has grown, 2 weeks is cruel IMO.

I thought they couldn't see a heartbeat at 6 weeks that's why they wait just in case, I think you seeing a heartbeat is a positive sign. I hope it works out for you I really do.

Thanks for the messages ladies.

Sweetkitty - they wanted me to wait four weeks for a scan! I said that was too long so they agreed to let me have one in 2 weeks. Really sorry to hear your experience, it does sounds very similar, but the fact my baby had a heartbeat did give me a little more hope.

I had some pain this morning and was convinced I was going to lose the baby today so didn't go for a scan. I couldn't face going for them to just tell me the baby had died again.
Nothing has really happened yet though and the pain has eased off, so might try to book in for one tomorrow. You never know, everything might be all right! We have to hope don't we?

Always got to have hope kitpuss, I think the heartbeat is a positive sign for sure. I have had 4 pregnancies in total, first one I had a heavy red bleed but baby was fine, second one was the only one no bleeding, third was tiny amount of brownish blood to start with and this was the mc, this one (am 20 weeks now) I had red and brown blood at 10 weeks after seeing a heartbeat at 8 weeks but this one was fine too. So have bled twice and gone on to have healthy babies.

Will keep everything crossed for you

Thanks Sweetkitty, it's really reassuring to hear from someone who had bleeding and who has gone on to have healthy pregnancies. Hope everything continues to go well for you!

As for me, the pain and bleeding have stopped but the epac centre won't let me go for a scan until next week. Last year I had a missed miscarriage where the only symptom was a little bit of brown bleeding, so it is hard not to worry now when my symptoms have been worse! I feel that they are being really mean not letting me go for a scan, but I'll just have to accept it and wait until Tuesday.
