Worrying midwife call

Hi all,

My son’s partner is 13 weeks pregnant and her midwife just called to say the hormones are low around the baby and baby is smaller than it should be, they’ve said she needs to start taking aspirin. She’s so worried, we all are, and I just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this? Hoping for reassurance too!

Is she in the UK? How was the 12 week scan?

Is it low papp-a? If this is the low hormone then it just indicates an increased probability for some pregnancy risks & aspirin is recommended as a precaution (although evidence is limited that it helps it certainly doesn't harm).
The vast majority with this have normal pregnancy. There's a facebook group with lots of info. Look up NICE guidelines. Very reassuring. They'll offer her extra scans now to make sure baby is growing okay. A small baby isn't necessarily an issue as long as it follows it's own growth line. My DS was always measuring small but grew consistently. Baby was on the smaller side but perfect.

Not entirely clear on what it is from this but it might be as pp said low papp-a. If all that is being offered is aspirin then I would think it’s not a huge issue. Lots of pregnant women take aspirin as it is seen to reduce risk. I personally take it due to diabetes.

If she is unclear then I would really recommend her arranging a call with the midwife where another person listens and supports her. I find in pregnancy that if I get any indication something isn’t right I start to panic, don’t ask the right questions and also don’t really hear what’s being said. I won’t go to an appointment now without DH or a friend.
