just Wondering peoples experiences of accuracy?
I had a growth scan at 35 weeks which estimated baby to be 6lb 5oz .. I’m delivering at 37+2 and packed newborn baby grows … they say 7lb 5 on them ( Tesco) …. Is my baby going to be too large ?! Or do I take the measurements with a pinch of salt

I would pack newborn and one or two 0-3. Someone can always drop you in extra as required. Both mine were supposed to be over 7lb but came in at 5lb 11oz and 5lb 13oz, so it's not always correct.

Bibijuju · 25/03/2023 20:51

I had a growth scan at 36 weeks and DS measured 5lb 5oz, he was born at 39 + 4, 6lb 12oz
He was never going to be a “big” baby so I made sure I brought newborn stuff into the hospital but he fit into tiny baby better for the first couple of weeks!

davegrohll · 25/03/2023 21:10

I took a couple of newborn and a couple of 0-3. Vest, babygrow, hats and mittens.
I had gestational diabetes so was constantly told my baby would be a whopper, she was on the 97th centile etc. she was 7lb 6oz born! Take with a pinch of salt!

Fueledbycoffee · 25/03/2023 21:17

My growth scan at 36+4 weeks was 7lbs 2oz... baby born at 37+5 and was 9lbs 7oz. The scans can be so inaccurate! So I'd take a mixture of newborn/up to 1 month and 0-3 just in case. With my first I only had newborn and they were far too small and had to send my dh to get clothes. Second time I didn't bother with anything smaller than 0-3!

wedonttalkaboutyouno · 25/03/2023 21:42

I had a growth scan, and was induced that evening due to poor growth. Born the next morning, she was 11oz lighter than the growth scan the previous day had estimated. So I would just pack newborn clothes but don’t buy too many until they are born!

emma1103 · 25/03/2023 21:45

I was consistently told my baby was small, 10th centile.....she was born 8lb 2oz.

justanotherlaura · 25/03/2023 21:59

I was told at 38 week scan he'd be 9.5lbs and he was 7lb 12 born on his due date.

Clothes can be a bit loose and baggy won't hurt them, I'd mostly bought 0-3 thinking he'd be big and wore those for a few days til we got to the shops

WeightoftheWorld · 25/03/2023 22:07

I didn't have growth scans with my first, she was born just under 7lbs. We took newborn clothes to the hospital and they swamped her, we had to put her in small baby when we got home.

My second, I did have growth scans, and they told me he was going to be roughly the same size as DD. He was instead 8lb 6 and therefore in newborn clothes but only for a very short period of time. So it wasn't accurate at all.

posygir · 25/03/2023 22:30

Highly unlikely they'll be too large. All my babies in the 7lb range fitted newborn (even the ones above 7lb5). The only one who didn't fit was the near 9lb one and that was only really because she was so long.

Accuracy depends on the scanner and position of the baby. Mine have always been quite accurate- slightly underestimated.

Catdaft · 25/03/2023 22:32

Was told my baby was small and she was 9lbs 5oz

Diversion · 25/03/2023 22:37

I was told that my baby was tiny, there were concerns about incompatibility with life and we refused further testing. She was born perfect at 6lbs 4oz which is almost twice the size of her big sister who was 3lbs 11oz at 35 weeks due to pre eclampsia. Buy a couple of newborn packs and a couple of 0-3 packs and go from there. Have a very lovely birth 😄

MamaBear1022 · 25/03/2023 23:10

36 week growth scan as bump was measuring small and 7lbs 2. Born at 40+3 and weighed 8lbs 2

MissMooley · 25/03/2023 23:14

I was told my first would be a whopper, can't remember the weight they predicted. She was 6lb 12.
My boys I was reassured they'd be no bigger than 8lb. They were 9lb 10 and 9lb 11.
Ive put them all in nb and they've fit well enough to do a few days

The scans are completely inaccurate IMO
I had a growth scan for my first pregnancy, I was measuring in the 90th percentile (even though I am 5'2 and healthy weight) the growth scan at 36 weeks he was apparently 6lbs 8oz.
My son was 14 days overdue and only weighed 6lbs 6oz.

Doublechins · 25/03/2023 23:24

At one point I was told my 3rd was going to be over 13lb! Growth scan just over a week before he was born said over 10lb. He was 8lb 12 so nowhere near.

BridieConvert · 26/03/2023 00:29

My growth scan at 37/8 weeks estimated 6lb... baby was born 39+6 at 8lb 6oz.

I packed 3 sets (vest and sleepsuit together in a food bag) of each size - newborn and 0-1 month (up to 10lb). Never used the newborn size this time, but I remember newborn being massive on my first! Such a guessing game.

pinkyvase · 26/03/2023 02:28

My baby was consistently on the 90th centile for all his growth scans and there were concerns at going full term because of his size (I am small). He was born on 30th centile so a huge pinch of salt needed!! I took newborn as well as 0-3 month, he was in newborn size for the first three weeks

addictedtotheflats · 26/03/2023 06:43

I had a growth scan at 39 weeks and estimated 7lb 6. He was 9lb 9 at 40+ 10

addictedtotheflats · 26/03/2023 06:44

41+3 even, just finishing a night shift 🙈

WaltzingWaters · 26/03/2023 06:47

Can’t remember the weight predicted but had a growth scan and baby was estimated pretty huge. He came out on time at 6lbs 5ozs and needed tiny baby clothes! Take estimates with a pinch of salt.

Brunonono · 26/03/2023 08:10

I had a growth scan in the morning and baby delivered the same afternoon around 1lb more than they thought which is quite the margin of error on an 8lb baby!

RosaBonheur · 26/03/2023 08:17

Firstly, growth scans aren't usually very accurate.

At my 32 week scan my baby was estimated to be 2.1kg and the doctor predicted that her birth weight would be around 3.8kg.

At 36 weeks she was estimated to be 2.9kg.

At 38 weeks I had another scan and the doctor predicted that her birth weight would be around 3.4kg.

At 40 weeks I had another scan and the doctor predicted that she currently weighed 3.3-3.4kg.

At 40+2 she was born at 3.2kg.

So the predictions got slightly better the closer I got to the end of my pregnancy, but they all overestimated her weight, even the day before I went into labour.

Also, in my experience how long newborn size fits has more to do with how long the baby is and how big their feet are than how much they weigh.

Dottylotti · 26/03/2023 08:27

My growth scan at 38+2 they told me my baby was going to be 10lbs+. Baby was born at 40+3 at 8lb3, the scans aren't very accurate. Take a few different sizes.

Hopefully you have a birthing partner:support who has access to your home. I then made ziplock bags with 3x vests and sleepsuits in different sized batches and labelled the bags clearly, that way they can grab the bag and bring it in for you. Don't panic too much as the shops are still open too, so if you find they enter and need a size you don't have many of you can still get some.

Good luck, try not to stress too much Flowers
