So admittedly 1st trimester was tough going. The only thing that kept my nausea at bay was anything carbs: pasta, bread, pizza, crisps, chips… Now here I am 15kg more 😂

Pre-pregnancy weight was 52kg, you do the math… I actually don’t feel that much bigger at all. Hoping to get back on track post partum!

I gained loads with first pregnancy - can't remember how much but a lot. Lost it all and more breastfeeding a hungry baby and by the time I was 10 months pp I looked the best I ever have. I miss breast feeding Grin

I gained 2.5-3 stone having previously been a similar weight to you. I didn’t immediately ping back but was near enough to my normal weight by about six months pp - not with any effort, but I think breastfeeding helped.

mrsfeatherbottom · 24/03/2023 20:46

I was very thin before my 1st pregnancy. I ate loads and not healthy at all and I think I gained about 4 stone! I was huge. Exclusively breastfed and the weight came off pretty quick. I never went back to very thin but was slim.

I gained 15kg with my 2nd baby. Breastfed her and she ate sooo much that with me eating a lot of food double what I'd eaten pre pregnancy I lost the 15kg over 10months. I'm back to just under pregnancy weight now 12 months pp. Still need to tone up a bit and lose a bit more to be in my happy place but I didn't think bf actually helped weight loss so much!

Please don't worry too much. Do what you need for you and bubba.

I wouldn't worry, I gained 3 stone in my first pregnancy, and 4 stone in my second. It took 3 weeks to return to my normal weight after my first pregnancy and about 8 months after my second (I didn't actually do anything to lose the weight I just went back to normal). I'm 22 weeks with my 3rd and have put on about 2 stone so far so who knows how much I'll gain this time 😅

DomesticElf · 24/03/2023 21:39

@cutiebreebree my weight pre first pregnancy was exactly same as yours. I gained about 25kg first pregnancy. Lost it all and some more without trying by DS first birthday, no stretch marks. It would have gone faster if I did something about it.
Now 21 weeks pregnant with #2 and already gained 10kg. Let's see how this rodeo goes ☺️

Thanks for sharing! Yes no stretch marks here either. It doesn’t quite feel like I’ve put on so much weight.

I stopped looking at thet the scales when they weighed me when I was expecting twins. But I definitely gained more than that! Back to normal weight at 4 months PP, but skin took longer to be normal. Remember that you have increased blood volume and are carrying amniotic fluid, placenta and baby plus building lots of lovely muscle inyouruterus getting ready for delivery. You'll also be storing fat in preparation for breastfeeding. All totally normal, and it goes.

I'm the same, but I actually feel healthier now. I always felt too thin at 50kg.

UnicornRainbowSky · 25/03/2023 18:00

Second pregnancy here and I have definitely gained way more this time (first was 11kg). I don't fit into my old maternity jeans for example. But I lost it all within a few weeks last time so I don't stress. As long as you have a semi-healthy diet so that your body can build a healthy baby, that's all that matters. And you might need the extra reserves at some point. Growing a human is hard physical work!

hyacinthbluebell · 25/03/2023 18:38

I gained significant weight but lost it breast feeding with both pregnancies

Congratulations on the birth of your baby, OP. This sounds completely normal and expected.

My pre pregnancy weight was similar to yours, a bit more actually as I put on a few pounds when TTC. With my height, my starting BMI at my first booking appointment was in the healthy so I was told to aim to gain 25-35 pounds but it was stressed that it really didn’t matter if it was a bit more than this. It’s common and expected.

I see so many posts where women say things like “I’ve already gained X amount and I’m only half way through 😱” but it’s actually the recommended amount they’ve gained - at least if they started with a “healthy” BMI. (I understand lots of people don’t agree with BMI but this was the general guidance I was given.) If they’re below the healthy range, it’s recommended they aim for more than 35 pounds and if they’re above it and are classed as overweight or obese they’ll be advised to aim for less. Please take such posts with a pinch of salt if you come across any and remember we don’t know women’s starting weight, height, BMI etc.

And so what if women put more on than the recommended amount? I think most do - at least the women I know. The weight really does drop off and even more so when they start toddling around! The extra fat reserves are meant to help with breastfeeding.

StonePie · 29/03/2023 14:08

I put on 15ish in my pregnancies and have lost it all but took a while (few years to lose the last 2-3kg).

I'm in Ireland and for both my pregnancies I was weighed once at the first appointment - 12 weeks. I was a healthy BMI pre-pregnancy so would have been much the same at 12 weeks.
I was never weighed subsequently and nobody ever commented on my weight gain/ potential weight gain/ ideal weight gain

(Sorry OP I know that's not answering your question)

By the time I decided I was ready to lose the extra weight I was about 6kg above where I wanted to be.

I stopped eating breakfast, continued to breastfeed and did a yoga 30 day journey with Adrienne (took me 60 days to complete!) That seemed to get the weight loss going

cutiebreebree · 29/03/2023 20:39

Thanks all for your comments! I’d like to share this link I came across last week: https://www.tommys.org/pregnancy-information/im-pregnant/weight-management/how-much-weight-should-i-gain-pregnancy

I think it’s a more realistic approach to weight gain in pregnancy than the standard 12kg max on the NHS site! Thinking about my weight pre pregnancy, there is no way I could have supported my 9-month belly and I have made peace with the fact that I actually needed to gain weight for extra strength!
