Early labour or wishful thinking?

I'm 38+3 with baby #3. With my first 2 my waters broke before labour began so I never had to worry about timing contractions as I was already in hospital by that point. Previous babies delivered at 35+1 and 38+0 so this is also my longest pregnancy so far.

I was feeling quite uncomfortable yesterday, like frequent braxton hicks but something felt different about them. They started at the top.of my bump and were more crampy than regular braxton hicks which are generally just tight and a bit uncomfortable. They weren't very regular, aybe twice an hour or so, so I kept an eye on it and went about my day as normal.

Later at night it became more regular and uncomfortable so I download a timer app. Between 10.50pm and 3.40am they were coming every 7-8 mins on average and lasting around 30-50 seconds. I decided to try and get some sleep at that point. I was woken up by a 'contraction' around 5am but except from that managed to get a few hours sleep. Since I've woken up this morning I've had maybe 2 or 3 little ones but it seems like it's slowed down/stopped for now.

Could this be early labour? I know it can stop and start in the beginning. Am I right in thinking thr best way to get things going is to stay active? Honestly I just want to go back to my bed as I didn't sleep much last night and am always tired being heavily pregnant, but I guess the best thing to do is to stay active and see if it goes anywhere?

About an hour after posting this I started bleeding so I called triage who told me that it sounds like early labour and to call them back when my waters break or I'm having 3 contractions in 10 mins. Really hoping to progress reasonably quickly aa I know this stage can take a long time and can start and stop.

Good luck, hopefully you've stopped bleeding now?

No, the more I have 'contractions' the more I seem to bleed, but it's certainly not heavy and triage weren't concerned about it when I called them.

I found Braxton Hicks where something else with my third and always worst at night. For me the bloody show was the proper sign, there really was no mistaking it 😅 good luck and I hope you get your baby soon, even if I am achingly jealous that it's at a civilised level of pregnancy instead of incredibly overdue!

Yes I've had braxton hicks quite badly since around 20 weeks this time. Even when they've been uncomfortable they've never followed any kind of pattern which is how I knew yesterday something was different. Just hoping things progress and I don't end up in early labour for days!

I'd be concerned about the bleeding even if they weren't tbh. Better to be safe than sorry.

Also pregnant with baby #3 btw (although early stages)

I just wanted to come back and give an update. The contractions were getting more painful and lasting longer, however they weren't becoming more frequent and my waters weren't breaking like they wanted. I called triage back in the morning and told them I was struggling. They asked me to come in and be examined but let me know its likely I would be sent home again as I wasn't having the 3 contractions in 10 mins they wanted. After being hooked up to the monitor for around 2 hours they finally did an internal exam and I was actually 5cm dilated, so they kept me in and baby was born at 12.30am on Sunday morning. It took me about 6 hours to get from 5cm to 6/7cm, then my waters finally broke and everything went quite quickly from there. If I'd waited until I was having 3 contractions in 10 mins or my waters broke I think I would've struggled to make it on time, and certainly wouldn't have had time for pain relief!

Early labour or wishful thinking?
