Am I a fatty??

I am 20 weeks with my first. I fell pg on my honeymoon when I was still able to get into my teeny weeny wedding dress. I started out with a bmi of 19/20 and am 5ft 11 and usually about a size ten. So, the question is, am I a big fatty for having put on a stone so far? I swear I have not gone crazy on the snacks and I am still going to the gym twice a week and I have still put on more weight than any of my friends!!

How can this be fair!! I don't think I would mind if I had been indulging in my daily craving for chips, mars bars, maltesers (am drooling. . .).

Is this normal???

A stone? I put that on EVERY XMAS and I don't lose it, I've put on 9lbs since I found out I was pregnant and I'm only 11 weeks! Scary but true. Not being a size 10 isn't going to kill you when you're pregnant, if you don't like it once you've had your baby then you can diet, it's no big deal (that's what I'm telling myself anyway!)

scorpio1 · 12/02/2008 15:26

yep, it is about normal.

Overall pg gain is said to be at least 2 stone.

SAEJ · 12/02/2008 15:30

Phew! Not worried about gaining it but of the girls I know they spend all day moaning that they have not put on any weight and it was starting to make me feel awful!!

I know it must be a bit of a worry if you don't gain weight but I was just starting to feel like a massive moose!!

Well if they aren't eating anything more than they normally do then they won't put on weight, some people (especially stick-thin people in the first place) seem to forget this. I personally can't stop eating and I just think sod it, I'm trying to eat healthier things now because I don't actually want to become obese, but I'm not going to worry when a couple of stones goes on, if you can't put on ooodles of weight when you're pregnant when can you put it on eh!!

SAEJ · 12/02/2008 15:39

I agree. Leading up to my wedding I was on a serious diet and now my habits are back to normal with the odd 'treat' for the baby such as a nice big sticky bun!!

I just hate it when they ask how much I have put on and I confess and then I get all smug smiles and comments about how I will struggle to lose it afterwards.

Most people struggle to lose weight SAEJ and carrying it round for a bit isn't the end of the world, we can't all be Heidi Klum!

ChinaSurprise · 12/02/2008 15:58

SAEJ - if you are on the slim side, which with your BMI you are, then you'll tend to put more on during pgy than fatties.
HOWEVER, I'd say a stone is totally normal for 20 weeks, looking at my preggy books. I'm 23 weeks and have put on a stone and 2lbs and I don't feel fat at all.
Btw, wtf are people asking you how much you gained? None of their business surely? I'd just tell them you've only gained half a stone - people don't know the difference. Half my friends think I'm massive, half say I've hardly gained at all - people's perceptions of pregnant women are usually wrong ime so far.
Btw - when are you due? Pop over to the June 08 antenatal club if you like!

lollipopmother · 12/02/2008 15:58

I should've said 'most people struggle to lose weight whether it's pregnancy weight or otherwise'. Tell the smug b*stards to go away!

lljkk · 12/02/2008 18:53

My BMI is usually about 21 and if I put on much less than 2.5 stone by end of the pregnancy I would def. end up underweight post-partum. I think the 2 stone figure that gets cited is really for people who start out a bit plump already...

FrannyandZooey · 12/02/2008 18:55

I am 19 weeks and have put on at least a stone also

you may be glad of it after the birth, I put on 3 stone with my first and rapidly lost it while breastfeeding

if you are slim to begin with you may need a little extra padding to help you out

Tapster · 12/02/2008 19:00

I put on 3 stone (only started off at 8 stone) with DD - lost 2 stone in two weeks 9lb 1oz baby though, and the rest of the weight by 6 months through BFing

karney · 12/02/2008 20:13

Hi BMI, glad you posted about the weight gain. I'm small made - only 5ft 1" and usually 7st10lbs. I don,t diet. I'm now 13 wks pg and have put on 6llbs and which my friends seem to think is a lot so early. One friend is 7mths pg and has only put on a stone and another friend is 20 wks and hasn't put on as much as me.They say they're not watching their weight but wha they do is up to them I suppose. They gasped when told them I had to buy bigger clothes already. It's been making me feel rubbish but hey I'm happy this pg seems to be going well so far and eating helps my sickness. So here's to big bellies. x

karney · 12/02/2008 20:19

Oh, SEAJ not BMI ?????

slim22 · 12/02/2008 22:30

stop listening.

Each woman is different and each pregnancy is different.

With DS I put on stone, one in each trimester and was not stuffing myself. Lost it all through 5 months BF.

This time I'm +1st at 27 weeks and gaining slowly. Having morning sickness first trimester probably saved me the first trimester unnecessary weight gain.

Your BMI is on the low side. You need the fat reserve for BF. To Cheer you up, be aware that you'll burn about 500 calories a day through BF. So if you eat healthy, it's going to fall off in no time.

Enjoy.

Thanks, feel much happier! Love the advice lollipopmother. I was not actually concerned that i had put on weight until other peopl made an issue of it - I don't expect to look like a celeb and I expected the whole world to have an opinon on my pg but I never expected there to be a competition about avoiding weight gain.

I know everyone is different and some people naturally don't gain lots of weight but I find it shocking that my 'friends' can actually think it is a good thing to avoid putting on a healthy amount of weight.

Think I will make a point of enjoying a particularly huge piece of cake in front of them today!!!

I love being pregnant because I don't feel guilty about what I eat , I know it will come off after (or most of it will) and it's so nice not to stress about it.I also love not having to hold my stomach muscles in but as you were a size 10 before you wouldn't have worried about that !!

I'm normally a size 14/16 and would never dream of wearing a bikini in real life but during pregnancy if the occasion arose I would as I don't have that jelly belly!!I'm proud of my bump.

slim22 · 13/02/2008 10:23

There you go that's the spirit!

I have a friend who blushed when she admitted gorging on oranges when pg!
At the same time, I was stuffing my face with Ben & Jerry's double chocolate brownie ice cream pretty much every night......hence +18 kg.

Pinchypants · 13/02/2008 11:27

SAEJ, you sound perfectly normal. It's not a great idea to be too worried about gaining weight during pregnancy - some people just put on more than others and personally I eat what I fancy, when I want it, and assume that the gym, breastfeeding, running round after a toddler, pushing a pram and a sensible diet will sort it all out afterwards. I didn't weigh myself once with DD and haven't this time around either. I know I've put on weight after just 13 weeks (was size 14 to start with) but hey, if I can't relax about that now then when can I? That's what elasticated waists are for!
Relax and have that choccy cake, and sod the stick thin people.
