Tommy's app trial - moderate risk

Hi all,

I've just had my 20 week scan and whilst baby appeared fine under all the checks, at the end the sonographer referenced that as I'd been identified as "moderate risk" under a new "Tommy's app" trial I would need extra growth scans.

That was the first I'd heard of it. Apparently my midwife was meant to have told me after the 12 week scan that there was an issue with blood flow. The sonographer was very apologetic and said she couldn't say anything more about the risks because they aren't trained to but that they would just need to keep a closer eye.

Does anyone know more about the trial and what it means? From Google I have found an article which talks about it looking at increased risk of preterm birth or placenta issues leading to still birth. Thank you - my head's in a bit of a spin. Unfortunately I've been having trouble getting hold of my midwife recently so I'm not sure when we'll be able to discuss it.

I was involved in a trial at a different London hospital some years ago to do with placental blood flow. I had to take aspirin up to 28 weeks, and received extra growth scans. I think this is still trialled elsewhere - I was never made to think it was anything serious but did then become consultant led due to the trial.

Thank you @turnthebiglightoff. Really appreciate it. From what Ive read so far it does sound like it might be similar. When did you start taking the aspirin? The sonigrapher seemed a bit alarmed that I hadn't been told anything about it yet.

Sorry for the typos there - sonographer even.

I started taking it after my 12 week scan - there was "an issue" (never fully discussed!!) with the blood flow in and out of my placenta, but nothing was mentioned at 20 weeks. I stopped taking the aspirin at about 26 weeks as I was ill and admitted to hospital (not placenta related!!) so was told to stop taking.

Thank you, @turnthebiglightoff. I hope everything else went smoothly for you - that must have been stressful to be so ill.

It looks like aspirin is only thought to be effective if you start it before this point - 20 weeks is too late. I wish they'd told us as soon as they knew it was an issue so we could have informed ourselves and done what we could. Now there is apparently nothing you can do but wait and see whether baby's development is affected.

How old are you? What's your bmi? Do you have any other risk factors?

teacakesforbreakfast · 22/03/2023 09:37

Thanks, @evergreen2. I'm early 30s, normal BMI and no known other risk factors except that I have PCOS.
