Pregnancy and TSH

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone has issues with their TSH during their pregnancy and was diagnosed with anything in the second trimester?

I am around 15+6 and in January had a TSH test due to HG. They made me retake another one in Feb and be forwarded to an Endocrinologist which the appointment was today because it was the only one available (so a month later) she told me my results were now pointless because it was a month later in which I explained like, because it was the only appointment I could get.

she then explained how it was very important for the baby in the first trimester to have been on medication or had a working thyroid as it depends on this hormone for important growth and I have been honestly left just so disappointed at the fact it’s way too late to have dealt with it, I was just following my doctors orders and the waiting times. It’s my first child and I’ve never been diagnosed with any thyroid issues before so had no clue if there’s an issue or not and amongst all the other stresses of being a first time Mum, I am British living in Italy so sometimes I am just overwhelmed by the language, the processes have to pay for test after test as it’s what they do here so toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus, Coombs every month. Because I’m over 35 we even did a NIPT instead of the offered amniocentesis for the risks and the HG that left me practically unable to move for three months. I am not enjoying this at all as I just worry all the time.

so perhaps I’m just looking for some reassurance with this whole thyroid issue and the complications it can have on the baby, I mean, was anyone diagnosed late and everything was ok in the end?
Obviously I will have to just wait and see but today I am just feeling crap about it! Anyway thanks in advance all!

Did they tell you what your TSH was (even if it was a month ago)?

considering you have to pay for all the testing it’s a bit shit that you then had to wait so long for the result!

Yes, in Jan it was 4.23 and then in Feb it was 3.23 and now I’m being retested on Wednesday for another appointment on Monday.

@Ninuzz That’s not hugely high so please try not to worry. TSH does increase during pregnancy it’s not something that would be routinely looked at so I’m sure you’d find many women who had a TSH of this or higher and everything worked out fine.

That makes me feel better because I was stressing! Thanks a lot 😊
