I am convinced I seen a twin on my scan

Had my first scan today 13 +6 and the sonographer was very focused on my lower right side. Baby wasn't playing ball and was facing inwards so we could only see its spine, she did a quick sweep over to the left, quite high up and I thought I seen what looked like a different baby in a completely different position - head up like in a seated position. I let out a little gasp as if to say wtf is that but she just said oh that position isn't going to help us see much and went back over to the right side where baby was lay spine outwards again. I'm now kicking myself for not telling her to go back!!! I know nothing about scans but it is possible for the view to change in such a way just by crossing to the other side of my tummy or is there a chance a second baby has been missed?? I've been trying to find a video on YouTube of what I mean but can't find one. I'm sending myself mad!!!

If you can, I would book a private scan for some peace of mind or it will tear you apart until the 20 week scan! Sounds very unusual for a sonographer to miss a second baby in there but I guess it is possible

Lanky18 · 19/03/2023 19:26

I've actually looked into a private scan already. They're pretty pricey but I might have to. Am going to sleep on it and see how I feel. Yes I totally agree that it's unlikely, I mean they're trained to look for other babies, I'm assuming she knew exactly what she was seeing and I'm just a novice who has no idea 🙈

Its not unheard of though, ive read quite a few stories where another baby has been missed until further down the line.. theres no harm in asking at the 20wk scan (if you can wait that long )

Katiec1 · 19/03/2023 19:33

@Lanky18 twin momma here, yes it’s possible for a baby to missed during a scan. Not sure it happens often but it happens.
We found out we were pregnant with twins during a private scan at 8 weeks.
I know they can be pricey but if anything it would give you peace of mind so you’re not waiting till your next scan :)

Lanky18 · 19/03/2023 19:58

I'm totally kicking myself for not asking there and then. I think it was a mix of shock and not really knowing what I was looking at 🙈 defo going to consider the private scan!

@Lanky18 yeah it is possible for the view of the baby to completely change depending where the probe is. We have lots of different angled shots from one of our scans xx

AfterGlow87 · 20/03/2023 17:17

its possible to completely flip the baby and see it in a different view just by rotating the probe a different way, so perhaps that’s what’s happened? I’m a sonographer myself and while I’ve heard of twins being missed at earlier gestations, it’s quite uncommon at 12/13 weeks gestation especially in identical twins sharing a sac

Lanky18 · 20/03/2023 18:43

This is good to know, thank you. I've relaxed a bit and have just told myself that the lady knew what she was doing and what she was looking for. It's so interesting though, I wish I knew what I was looking at!

I'm pregnant with twins and I'd be surprised if it wasn't super obvious to the ultrasound technician at that many weeks. Mine are super high risk so we do a weekly scan and even just moving the probe quickly makes the image jump around. One second it's the top of their head, the next it's the side view and then looking up at their bottom. All in the matter of seconds, completely different views though.

I remember a TikTok of a woman who had a private scan and was told it was twins but one had no heartbeat. She was referred to the hospital urgently and when they checked they said it was poo! She needed a big poo and that was the additional baby the first person could see.

Might put your mind at rest a bit? Grin

Another vote for the US probe moving and the image being v different.

I've never done a pregnancy US but I've done loads of echos. That's US of the heart. US doesn't go through bone or air and the heart is behind ribs and lungs so you have to move the patient and the probe about quite a lot.

Link to pictures, it is the same heart but from different angles - you don't need to know what you are looking at to see that things look very different.

Good luck with your baby.

I'm sorry, I'm no doctor but this seems very implausible. How can you confuse a baby with a blood supply and cells etc with a lifeless lump of shit?

Villssev · 27/03/2023 05:55

I know nothing about scans

First time you had ever seen a scan?
13 weeks?

op you will laugh about your certainty in time!

mumofboys8787 · 27/03/2023 06:18

Lol this thread is funny. I hope the OP didn't waste money on a private scan because she thought she saw a twin that the trained sonographer missed 😂

Me too. Sounds like she’s on a budget and would be daft to waste on this

No idea, she said it was an early scan (I think the earliest you could do from what I remember) and a private scan too. Could have been fake I guess but as a general gist what I'm trying to reassure OP of is it could have been anything OP saw on my scan. Once a sonographer at my hospital said "and that's your bladder..." whilst whizzing by. You can see lots on an ultrasound scan, not just inside your womb.

ittakes2 · 27/03/2023 06:37

Ultrasounds usually show blood supply too and heart beat so sorry I doubt she missed a second baby at that stage in pregnancy

it was a TikTok video? Yes, likely

Easiest scan you can do is about 6 weeks so very different to OP’s scenario in any event

Lanky18 · 27/03/2023 11:49

It's my third pregnancy so have had lots of scans, both previous pregnancies were high risk so involved more scans than normal from 20 weeks onwards but still couldn't say what I see on them apart from a baby and the cord but never in my life did I see what I thought I saw hence the post 🤷🏻‍♀️ no didn't pay for a private scan, as mentioned I'm keeping faith that the sonographer knew what she was doing and whatever I saw was just a trick of the eye/mind! Maybe instead of crazy dreams I see crazy scans 😂 Ps. Love the poo story 🤣

I'd imagine the sonographer knows what they are doing.
