I thought I heard sonographer say ‘his’

Hi everyone,

i had a 34 week growth scan (all fine thankfully). She asked me at the beginning if we knew the sex of the baby and I confirmed that we don’t. She called the baby ‘it’ throughout the appointment, apart from just after she had measured the femur and asked me to look away…I could’ve sworn she said ‘there’s his foot’ but it could’ve just been ‘its’ said quickly. I really wanted a surprise at birth this time, as we found out at 20 weeks with my other two. Is there still a surprise to be had?

Highly likely not a reveal, most sonographers slip into a 'his' or 'her' as their 'go to', calling a baby 'it' feels a bit odd/impersonal. Couple that with the fact you aren't sure if it was his or its, I think it's not a problem. It's 50/50 so you're going to get one of the two, and if its a boy you're going to think the sonographer revealed it anyway 😂

@E19897 if I don't know the gender of the baby I seem to always default to saying boy x

They said his at mine, I had a girl. I think some just say his or hers because some people get really upset about ‘it’. I feel sorry for sonographers a bit because whatever they say people get upset with them. Don’t worry about it, it’ll be one or the other.

Said his at mine too, it was a girl.

I think some sonographers just default to he or she. Same as pp, mine said ‘he’ throughout one of my scans. She was very much a girl.

Obviously still 50% chance it is a ‘he’ 😂

Thank you all! She didn’t seem to react after saying ‘his’, which also points to her using male pronouns as a default when she doesn’t say ‘it’. She was so lovely and even got some 3D pictures for me.

In labour wards it is often standard for doctors to use "her" to refer to the mother and "him" to refer to the baby. I learned this by watching Bodies on tv, haha. Whichever you heard, they were just talking about the baby and it doesn't hint at the gender. xx

Thank you everyone. Just to update: our beautiful baby girl arrived a couple of days ago!

The same thing happened to me. They said 'him' and I worried the surprise was over but I had a baby girl so I think they sometimes just refer to baby as a boy for some reason.
