Hello ladies,

I am due to go in for an induction tomorrow with our first baby (39+2). They will be using pessaries and I just wanted to know anybody else's experiences, shall I expect to be there a while? Or does anyone have any stories where the first pessary worked.

Thank you xx

Hope everything goes well tomorrow!

I was induced in August using a pessary. They inserted the first one about 3pm and said they would check it 6 hours later. I did a lot of walking whilst waiting and was getting a bit of back ache but I wasn’t sure if that was just because of the walking 😅 When they put me back on the monitor it was showing tightening a so they couldn’t put in a other pessary and offered a sweep instead. I was 2cm dilated so they said they would send me down to delivery for my waters to be broken as soon as possible, but warned it could be days. I was called for at 7am the next morning!

Joining the thread. I can't add an experience but I am being induced on Monday with my firstborn, so keen to hear people's experiences.

@FirstTimeTryer93 Good Luck with tomorrow!

I was induced at 38 weeks. I had two pessaries during the day, and then my waters broke at night after my pain slowly increased. By the middle of the next day they were worried I wasn't progressing and so considered offering me the syntocin drip, but by the time they were ready to give it to me I was 10cm dilated and then things moved pretty quickly without the drip. I had gas and air, and an epidural after being offered the syntocin. Whole process took around a day and a half, and then I was discharged after another day.

Hope everything goes well! I wish I had eaten more earlier because, induction or not, first labours often take a while and I was so washed out by the time baby came that I just wanted my hospital toast 😂

It is so difficult as every baby and every pregnancy is different.
In my case I was induced with a pessary on the Sunday. Pessary did nothing constructive (just made me very uncomfortable!) in the 24 hours, so they tried another. Same again, very limited progress and just really ramping up the pain but not dilation. Was put onto the drip to speed things along and that was cranked up. Absolute agony. Had an epidural, but baby still wasn't convinced. Finally got to the pushing stage and could see her head but then her heart rate dropped and to be honest, after 4 days of labour I was exhausted, so we ended up in theatre and she was helped out with forceps late Weds evening.
But please remember this is just one story, I have read other stories where the pessary worked pretty quickly and from pessary to birth was under 24 hours. Everyone is different.
