Hi everyone,

I had my nuchal scan today. Probability they gave us was 1 in 177. Versus 1-850 in a normal woman my age (27) non smoker etc etc

I realise that this is still less that 1%.
I was really upset at the time. But there is a part of me that just didn't trust the sonographer, the baby wouldnt cooperate position wise and she really really struggled to get a measurement at all.

when she did get a measurement she did it 3 times, only one was outside of the normal range and that is the one she went with. Another reason i didnt trust her was that she was looking for my overy under my rib...hmmmm! I don't think this is me being in denial, i just didn't feel like she was any good.

After the result a midwife came and spoke to us about further testing, amnio, cvs etc which we need to think about.

I have 2 questions for you though...

  1. How concerned should i be?
  2. Should i get another scan privately, maybe have it combined with the bloods (they didnt offer this)

If i was to get another scan, can anyone recommend anywhere in London (north/North West / Central) I would want to see a consultant this time not just a sonnographer, any recommendations?

Thank you in advance, sorry for the ramble
xxx

They have to do it three times and take the largest measurement, that's the protocol. Was there a big difference between the measurements?

Personally I'd recommend the Fetal Medicine Centre on Harley Street -- £150 for a private nuchal scan combined with blood test, but they are fantastic and at the cutting edge of this kind of screening (it was here that they pioneered the nasal bone screening combined with the NT measurement).

Thank you both for your replies, i guess it makes sense to take the largest measurement.
The other measurements were 1.90 and 2.30 with the largest being 2.7.

I think i will give the Fetal Medicine centre a call tomorrow.

Hatrick, that is a massive difference in your odds from the begining to after the blood test. I hope it all works out well for you.

would have another scan & blood tests - I've had bigger nuchal measurements & all ok - hope the same for you xxx

I can't possibly say, how worried you should be depends how you perceive potential disability

PortAndLemon · 11/02/2008 20:41

That is a big difference -- I can't remember exactly but all three of the measurements they took for me were within 0.3mm or so, so you've got to question how accurate your measurements can be. I'd definitely be looking to have another scan in your position.

Would youndefinitely terminate if you got a very high risk / certainty?

trhat's obv. not something you need to answer on ehre- it's what the Antenatal counsellor told us when ds3 had a similar test result to yours. It's worth considering- especially if amnio / CVS becomes an issue due to the associated risks.

FWIW DS3 doesn't have Down Syndrome- he does have a fairlys evere case of another, untestable SN though (ASD). there's no such thing as a gurantee in these things.

ARC is a good cahrity that will chat these thinsg through, and the FMC sounds like a good starting point. But its worths atrting to think early abut the end point for you- if there's no way you'd terminate (for us that was the case but of course people differ) there's really no point in CVS / Amnio; we thought we wanted answers but i think the risk associaed was too high, and I am so glad I didn't now. But it really is a personal thing.
