Booking appointment at 13 weeks

Hi all, longtime lurker but 2nd time mum. My previous pregnancy was ages ago and I don't remember all the details.

I'm currently 5 plus 2 and afflicted with the usual nausea and exhaustion. I, however, remembered to self refer to the midwife unit. It's a bit surprising when the first availability is when I'm 13 weeks! I guess no surprise due to the state of the NHS. Even my first scan is when I'm 12 weeks on the dot!

But is there any issue for it to be so late? Should I push to be seen earlier?

TIA

I don't think you can push, they're busy apparently.

I'm having mine at 10 weeks and my scan will be booked then.

I'm having an early scan for a bit of reassurance but obviously things could still change between the scan and 12 week scan

Unfortunately this is fairly standard in a lot of areas due to midwife shortages. However if you are fit and well it should not be an issue to have booking appt at 13 weeks. If you have any medical history you are concerned could impact a pregnancy/be impacted by pregnancy then it is worth contacting your GP (I know this is also not easy to do). For example if you have a thyroid condition it is important to get your levels checked as early as possible.

Your first scan being 12 weeks on the dot is entirely normal, needs to be done between 11 and 13 weeks. The NHS does not offer early scans unless there is a problem such as bleeding, severe pain etc or a history of miscarriage. You can book a private one for reassurance but that's about it.

The first trimester I found the hardest with the anxiety of hoping everything was going to be ok and lack of contact with health professionals. Wishing you well for your pregnancy x
