I am feeling a little anxious about this as my husband doesn't drive.

What did you do?

A taxi unless you are bleeding heavily or about to deliver

Hope it all goes well x

JingleyJen · 11/02/2008 16:08

taxi unless it is an emergency and I would say that a normal full term labour is not IMO an emergency.

posieflump · 11/02/2008 16:09

well I left it far too late for a taxi but if it is your first time I would definitely go in a taxi
You might get sent home though the first time you go in so it might be worth getting a friend or family member to drive you

posieflump · 11/02/2008 16:09

also have you worked out how to get home once the baby is born?

theowlwhowasafraidofthedark · 11/02/2008 16:10

I have this worry as well (only 10 weeks pg though). DH taking his test next week, but beginning to think I'd rather get a taxi/take a bus/crawl than be in a car with a nervous beginner...
Good luck

Do you have a neighbour who would help out in these circumstances or a friend or family member that would help you out? I think unless birth is imminent then a taxi would be fine, is it far to the hospital?

MegBusset · 11/02/2008 16:12

I'm sure a taxi will be fine, but have enough cash handy for a couple of journeys, in case they send you home again!

serant · 11/02/2008 16:14

I would be ok for family or friends to pick me up & i have car seat at the ready!

Thanks, will get the local numbers for taxis at the ready, i,m 38 wks so any day now!

I would really not like to drag anyone other than other half out, if it's in the middle of the night iyswim, so a taxi will be fine.

i'd get some towels by the door aswell, incase your waters go in the taxi

JossStick · 11/02/2008 16:42

Make sure the taxi firm are okay with this too - some refuse to take women in labour.

PrePG · 11/02/2008 16:48

I agree with Joss - I've heard taxis are usually not comfortable with having a woman in labour - I suppose it's a liability.

cazzybabs · 11/02/2008 16:52

WE took a taxi as we had no car...mind you 3rd time we walked .

cyanarasamba · 11/02/2008 17:03

This was brought up at our antenatal class at the hospital - they hate people calling ambulances who are in normal labour - costs the service 100's of £ for something which is not an emergency.

If you want your midwife to be vaguely sypathetic to you and on your side - don't do it, call a taxi.

I would imagine if you are worried about something e.g. needing to push, bleeding then calling the labour ward for advice about whether to call an ambulance would be the thing to do. Our labour ward always pick up the phone and their number was on the front of my notes.

Cheesetoastie · 11/02/2008 17:12

A friend of mine called an ambulance when she was in early labour. When she arrived at the hospital there was talk of charging her for the use of it! Call a taxi..unless you have an urge to push or bleeding etc.

Lolski · 11/02/2008 18:16

My waters broke in the middle of the night and I happened to be on my own. My DP was half an hours drive away at his brothers house. I called the labour ward to ask them what I should do (was 36 weeks and my first time so I panicked a bit !). They asked me if there was any blood in the waters. I looked and there seemed to bit a tiny bit so they said I should call an ambulance straight away. I asked if I could wait half an hour for my DP and then he could drive me but they said no call an ambulance straight away. Anyway I felt very guilty calling an ambulance so I asked a very good neighbour of mine and they took me.
