Pregnant and unvaccinated

Hello my DP has tested positive for covid. I'm unvaccinated but I had Delta really badly late 2021 (was on antibiotics, felt like the beginnings of pneumonia).
Has anyone been in the same position? I am not vaccinated due to health reasons which I'm not going in to on here but please be assured this advice was from 2 consultants I spoke to. I'm currently 26weeks pregnant. Thank you.

Hi!

My SIL got covid when 32 weeks pregnant. She’s also unvaccinated due to just not wanting to get vaccinated lol. Baby and SIL were absolutely fine. rest up, lots of fluids. And paracetamol only. If you’re worried - give your midwife a call. But I’m sure it’ll be ok x

Twoinapod · 11/03/2023 11:56

There’s no evidence to say that there’s any risk to pregnant women or unborn babies. It’s hardly any more than a cold now either, you might feel rough for a few days but that’s it. Most people don’t even test anymore.

SouthwestSis · 11/03/2023 12:27

@Twoinapod apart from the pregnant women who were unvaccinated and had to have their babies delivered early so they could be put on a ventilator in ICU......
Yes for most people it is a mild viral illness but that's because most are now vaccinated.
Pregnant women with covid need to let their midwives know in case they need treatment to prevent blood clots

SouthwestSis · 11/03/2023 12:28

Also there is a hospital doctors strike next week so may be more difficult to get medical attention

Dewintergarden · 11/03/2023 13:42

@Izzie94x @Twoinapod thank you I've spoken to the midwife in triage who said she hasn't seen anyone going into ICU for a very long time and it is mild now and the fact I had Delta should provide me with some immunity. I'm really anxious, so hopefully this is the case. The midwife said flu is more dangerous amongst pregnant women that she's seen.

@Dewintergarden you have natural immunity, and so does your baby through you, and thats better than being vaccinated. Eat well, rest, keep hydrated and active and youll be fine.

Sunshine2243 · 11/03/2023 14:28

If it hasn't been too many days since possible exposure, may be worth trying not to get sick by isolating from them in a different room.

Despite the internet-trained scientific experts, it is just generally better to avoid any illness, even flu/cold when body is already going through a major event to grow a whole human! Either way, keep up the immunity with as much immune boosting foods and activity as possible.

As a side, NHS also advises all pregnant women to get the flu and covid vaccines, as well as being generally up to date with your normal vaccines. www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/keeping-well/vaccinations/

Sunshine2243 · 11/03/2023 14:30

BTW of course if can't get vaccinated for health reasons then just follow the advice of the midwife etc

breakfastbagel · 11/03/2023 16:03

I'm unvaccinated and I got COVID at 40 weeks pregnant for the first time.

It was omicron so much milder than previous strains but it was totally fine, I did feel rough for 2 days but it wasn't as bad as the worst cold I've ever had.

Obviously if you can try and not get it that would be ideal as being ill when your pregnant is just crap anyway, maybe stay with a friend or parents?

But basically, don't worry. If you feel bad tell your midwife.

Twoinapod · 11/03/2023 17:03

@SouthwestSis i was pregnant during 2020 before any vaccine was brought out. Midwives repeatedly told me there was no additional risk for pregnant women and unborn babies, if there was I wouldn’t have been able to continue to work in a public facing role during lockdown throughout my pregnancy. It’s also just become a milder illness now, not just because many people are vaccinated, it’s milder in general.

@Sunshine2243 i haven’t seen anyone say she should try get ill, unless I’ve missed a comment somewhere? Obviously it’s best to try not to get anything. Unfortunately sometimes it’s unavoidable and as far as I can see people are just letting OP know that it isn’t something she needs to panic about as pregnancy can be stressful enough.

SouthwestSis · 11/03/2023 17:08

@Twoinapod then your midwives were wrong.

Literally quoted from the government website:
"If you remain unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, You are at more risk from COVID-19 than women of the same age who are not pregnant"
Just because the strains are milder does not mean there is no increase in risk in pregnancy when unvaccinated.

www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-vaccination-women-of-childbearing-age-currently-pregnant-planning-a-pregnancy-or-breastfeeding/covid-19-vaccination-a-guide-on-pregnancy-and-breastfeeding#:~:text=You%20are%20at%20more%20risk,serious%20complications%20from%20COVID%2D19.

Twoinapod · 11/03/2023 17:47

@SouthwestSis and this is an nhs leaflet 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dewintergarden · 11/03/2023 18:26

Thank you for all of your replies, they have really helped talk me down off a ledge as I have found my anxiety spiralling since finding out I am pregnant.
From yesterday we have been using separate bedrooms and toilets (I'm wearing a mask/gloves/sanitising like crazy). I've tested negative, but the last time I caught it from DP in 2021 I was negative for 3/4days after he was positive.
I am extremely worried, as I just want my baby to be fine and because I was so poorly and doxycycline was the only thing which helped me recover last time I just wanted to know if this variant was milder than delta.
If anyone else has first hand stories of not being vaccinated and having caught it before pregnancy and then during pregnancy I would appreciate you sharing your experience.
Thank you again for your replies!

@Twoinapod everything youve said is v sensible. And thanks for sharing the leaflet, hopefully itll help mothers to be make informed decisions

SillyOldBear3 · 11/03/2023 19:46

@Dewintergarden I am unvaccinated by choice and caught Covid in the Autumn. It was very mild, I had a raised temperature on the first day which I took paracetamol for. I was able to continue working from home as normal. I wouldn't worry, you will have natural antibodies and the new variant is mild. I'm now pregnant and obviously would rather not catch it again, but for me it was no worse than any other cold virus. My partner has since had Covid, we lived in the same house, shared a bathroom and kitchen, and I didn't catch it.

1sttimemummy2022 · 11/03/2023 20:16

I got covid last March at 39 weeks pregnant, I had a planned c section two days later.
Me and baby were absolutely fine
Only had 1st vaccination.

lifehappens12 · 11/03/2023 21:29

I had my last baby in jan 2021 during one the peak waves and before there were vaccinations. At 38 weeks my toddler caught covid and was at home with me. I was terrified I will be honest. But I didn't catch it from him and I certainly couldn't isolate from him.

I was in regular contact with my midwife and she was keen to reassure me that if I did develope covid and needed care I would still be looked after.

Knowledge is power - test regulatory now over the next week and keep in touch with your midwife who can advise

xttcbabyno1x · 11/03/2023 21:37

I had COVID early pregnancy and then last week (even though I had been vaccinated) I tested positive for influenza A, I felt awful, but baby is fine and so was I after a week! Trust the fact baby takes all they need from you and leaves you with nothing which is why you may feel worse but nothing fluids and paracetamol can't help xx

Dewintergarden · 12/03/2023 10:03

Thank you for the messages. I'm going to test later today as I've woken up a bit bunged up. DP said that when he had Delta it was a 9/10 and this is about a 6/10, so I'm hoping it is considerably milder if I catch it. I'm currently run ragged cleaning and washing everything he touches. I will do a test later on today.
