Hi all, first time pregnant mummy here, and first time posting!

I have my first scan on the 8th to determine how far along I am (I think around 3-4 month but only did a positive test in Jan)

I have through my NHS Cert, and I'd like to visit the dentist to make sure everything is okay.
I was told fillings etc are covered under the exemption, however would they happily replace my silver fillings to white if requested?

Hope I'm not being cheeky, it's a genuine question as my besties mum did the same thing back in the day.

Thank you for reading :)

Do you already have an nhs dentist?

It did my nut in that although I am technically entitled to free dental whilst pregnant, to access it I have to be registered with an nhs dentist. There are no nhs dentists taking on new patients in my county or the surrounding counties. In fact to even get a private dentist I had to phone 6 dentists to find one taking new patients. It's a postcode lottery. Get comfy with a land line and a cup of tea!

Heyy, thanks for the reply!
Yes my dentist is NHS and I have been with them for almost 5 years now.
I've never claimed anything via the NHS, I've always paid for my prescriptions previously but I assume I'm able to access as I'm already registered?

Excellent, I'd just ring them up and make an appointment, telling them you have a maternity exemption certificate. The receptionist will be able to tell you what is and isn't included. I ended up paying £95 for someone to tell me that my bleeding gums was within normal parameters for pregnancy. 🤦‍♀️

Hi @PokéMummy first time pregnant mummy here too!
You should be covered I would think! I used my mat exemption last week for an alteration on my dentures (no; I’m not 80 🤣). The certificate was backdated so even got a refund for the appointment the week before that I’d paid for!
When I told my dentist I was pregnant (at the first appointment incase of any X-rays etc) he pretty much told me just to have the alteration done now and when I have my certificate to get a new one made, so I would assume you can get your fillings changed if your dentist is on side! They claim the money back anyway so it’s all extra for them so no reason they should say no!

Oooh let me know if you manage to get this done as I’d quite like to change mine to white too 😁

I'm pretty sure they won't change an amalgam for white during pregnancy. For health reasons especially. Drilling out an amalgam exposes you to much more of the mercury in the amalgam than putting a new one in. They definitely won't do it in the first trimester. Once an amalgam is in its perfectly safe. But drilling it out is much riskier. Have a Google. I wouldn't advise it though. Maybe if you're still exempt after the birth you could consider it if you're not breastfeeding.
