Early pregnancy insomnia - desperate for help!

Hi, I've never made a thread on here before, usually a prolific lurker, but I desperately need some advice! I'm roughly 5 weeks pregnant, and the last four nights I have had the most terrible sleep I have ever experienced!

I either drop off OK and then wake ridiculously early and that's it (such as 4am today, with zero chance of going back off), or toss and turn for hours not able to drop off when I go up to bed. I was absolutely desperate by night three and did resort to a 50mg Nytol to knock myself out, but I've since read that taking anything in the first trimester is frowned upon, so I'm too scared to repeat again 😢

Does anyone have any advice on this at all? I appreciate it's probably just rising hormone levels at this stage, but I already have a three year old and work full time, I can't carry on feeling like a zombie! I never had anything like this in my first pregnancy.

Went to see Drs who were useless as anticipated, simply gave me a sleep hygiene leaflet and sent me away...reluctantly saying that if it carried on for another week/10days, they may 'have' to prescribe something as the risks to my health and safety would be greater than the risk to the baby.

I just feel utterly, utterly dreadful and desperate for some advice - thank you!

Not sure if it's frowned upon but a good place to start would be the old fashioned antihistamines that make you really drowsy.

Not sure if they're ok in pregnancy but worth a bit of research x

Hi, I had bad insomnia in second trimester and someone on here recommended magnesium. It seems to have helped me but could be a placebo effect! Fingers crossed it will be short lived for you.

I have allergies and swapped from fexofenadine (not recommended for pregnancy) to loratadine (okay in pregnancy) and it sends me to sleep.

Try eating more good wholegrain carbohydrates. Eat something before bed (toast) & have something easily digestible if you wake up in the night. I had bad early insomnia & found this helped.
