Glucose test & metaformin

Hi all, wondering if anyone can help me as midwife not answering and can't find anything online.

I have a glucose test on Wed AM and understand I have to fast etc. I take metaformin to manage PCOS, help with fertility etc. As this is a diabetic drug, I am not sure if I should continue to take it as normal or if I should stop taking it - and if so when?

I assume I probably should not take it so that there is a true reading of my glucose level? But imagine my base levels will be off any way because I have insulin resistant PCOS?

Any advice most welcome!

Oh and I also take thyroxine, should I stop that as well??

I was taking both for fertility issues before and into my first pregnancy, and I'm trying to remember what I was told by my GP.

I think it was, as the metformin is just for PCOS, then you can stop taking it at the end of the first trimester. Thyroxine probably was the same, if only taking for fertility issues. I'd speak to your GP though, as you don't want to mess around with your thyroid.

Oh, I also have PCOS with insulin resistance, and passed both GTTs with flying colours. Both babies were on the larger size for their gestation (7lb5 @ 37 weeks, and 8lb1 @ 38 weeks), but no gestational diabetes.

@dyra thanks for your response!

Not questioning stopping either of them, just want to know if I need to stop them just before the GT as they may skew results?

In that case, what you really need is to first speak to your GP about a medication review. They're the ones who can tell you if and when you would need to stop your meds before the GTT, so it is clear of your system and you get a true result.

Good question. I have my test on Friday and this hasn’t even crossed my mind! I’m on both. Will call my midwife tomorrow.

Hi. I take metformin for the same reasons and I continued to take it as normal before my glucose test. My midwife knows I take it and didn’t tell me to stop it.

@Dyra I wish it was that simple - unfortunately I'm in London and wait time for a GP call is 4 weeks. You're right, I should get a medication review in for the metaformin more broadly.

I'm a bit confused as to why I'm even doing a GT as I'm on metaformin, which is what they give to people with GD anyway...?

@OrcaBlondie thanks, I think I'll just do that then - will try my midwife again and see if I can get through!

@MyEasterEggs if you get any info please let me know what she says!

You probably tick enough risk factor boxes. For me it was BMI and family history of diabetes.
