Hello everyone
I'm about 5 and a half weeks and in two weeks time, we have booked a week's skiing holiday. Pregnancy was a bit of a surprise (a happy one, though) and wouldn't really choose to go skiing at this point. Has anyone else skiied when pregnant?
It's not so much me being reckless, more than I'm worried about other people knocking into me. My DH says I should find a cafe and drink hot choc and chill, but nice as that sounds, I think it's such a waste of money and everything not to get some skiing in.
All advice appreciated...

Thanks, j

nar but I cycled 20 miles a day while pregnant and fell off a fair bit (I have MS so balance isn't a good thing) All 4 kids were fine.

needmorecoffee · 09/02/2008 13:00

So have a great time although you may find you are more tired than usual.

doup76 · 09/02/2008 13:26

If you're not reckless and are good enough not to be falling over all the time then why not?
I must say though, I had a snowboarder come flying into me once I was really winded. He was totally out of control and I had zero warning....would not want to go through that whilst pregnant! But that kind of thing tends to happen when the pistes are very busy. If you are going for a week, taking it easy on the Saturday and Sunday when all the weekenders come, or at any point when it's getting busy and there are loads of stoned teenage snowboarders around!!!!

RibenaBerry · 09/02/2008 13:28

Haven't done it myself, but know someone who has. Her doctor told her that, obviously as doup says, there is always the slight risk of a serious collision with another person. However, generally at such an early stage everything is so protected inside you that minor bumps were not too much of a problem.

That's only second hand though. If you're worried, could you call your doctor?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 09/02/2008 13:29

Definitly do it!
Skiing trips will be almost impossible once the baby is born.

belgo · 09/02/2008 13:29

I would also be worried about all the other skiiers and snowboarders on the slope - you may be good enough yourself not to fall over - but can you really trust all the other people (and lets face it there are some crazy skiers/snowboarders out there) not to crash into you?

Not the same thing as cycling ime.

schneebly · 09/02/2008 13:33

I haven't but I would and I am not a very good skiier! As someone said it is so early on and the little bitty baby is so protected at this point that the chances of doing yourself any harm are very little. Dont push it too hard though - get lots of hot choc and realxing in too!

I would just go for a short period each day when the slopes are most empty. I would have been feeling too sick and tired to do much at that stage.

losingitagain · 09/02/2008 20:08

Yes, I did - on a stupidly difficult slope when I was about 3 weeks pregnant. Didn't know I was pg but all was fine. I fell once but landed on my head. I was a beginner and was terrified that the other skiers would run into me as they kept wooshing by at an incredible speed. It turned out that they were the Olympic team in training so were well able to avoid me

Jolibee · 10/02/2008 00:39

Yup agree go for it and enjoy your holiday, just take it easy on the weekend when it gets crowded. I've been white water rafting and surfing, and last weekend at 32 weeks swam with whale sharks. Would far rather be active and physically fit for the birth.

luvaduck · 10/02/2008 00:47

yup went skiing twice up to 14 weeks. everything fine but only had a couple of minor falls. it was also the fear of other people crashing into me - dh skiied behind me the whole way.
i had a fab time HOWEVER if something had happened i never would have forgiven myself. the royal college of obs and gynae says al exercise fine but specifically says to avoid horsriding and skiing. so its a risk but a small one.
that probably doesn't help!
good advice to do a bit when slopes are empty and have long lazy afternoons in the chalet (but sadly avoiding hot tubs and saunas aarrghh)

Sixer · 10/02/2008 00:52

yep.snowboarded the whole time, Ds is now a keen boarder. If you feel ok then do it.Unless ofcourse the doc says forget it.

wb · 10/02/2008 10:02

I went skiing for the first time at 6 weeks. Checked first w. doc who said it would be fine. Was maybe a bit more cautious than would otherwise have been but the advantage of being a beginner was that I was on the easier slopes, slow moving and easy to avoid. Found it knackering but had a great time.

stuffitall · 10/02/2008 10:03

I know people that have with no problems but I wouldn't. Agree with Belgo about others rather than yourself.. all those 50-year-old novice snowboarders etc.

Went ski-ing for 2 weeks at 22 weeks - had a very neat bump!! I didn't ski all day every day and didn't take any risks - stuck to blue and red slopes. Enjoy !

kindersurprise · 10/02/2008 14:41

A friend went skiing when pregnant, after gettign the all clear from her doctor.

Someone crashed into her and she spent half of her holiday in hospital while they monitored her.

The Austrian doctor asked her why she was skiing while pregnant, and she told him of her docs advice. He snorted and said that the "Flachland" doctors always say that.

I would not risk it.

Is there a spa or something where you could relax for a couple of days?

poppy34 · 10/02/2008 14:47

I skied at about 7/8 weeks - although I am not very good and was under close supervision as part of ski school. And I agree I was more tired than usual.

Am going again in a few weeks (will be 24 weeks) and will defintely not be skiing (and also both doctor/midwife advised against it this time - didnt ask when went last time on basis it was so early).

agree with others re the issue being other people (esp snowboarders) rather than you.

Hi - I would do whatever you feel happiest with! But would recommend caution! Particularly if you are a recreational skier rather than a normal fitness fanatic - it is a sport after all not a hobby! (a mistake I make everytime I go by not being fit enough!!

However just for information - I was involved in a high-speed collision (not my fault) when very early pg (didn't even know at the time!!), but couldn't walk for 3 days as I was so stiff and bruised - found out afterwards that ligaments etc start to relax as soon as you conceive so any accident may cause more injury. However DD was fine and at age 3 loves skiing herself!! Can't go fast enough!!

I did miscarry another baby while in a ski resort at around 5-6 wks pg, but hadn't been skiing - it was suggested that flying and high altitude can contribute to mc, but all the internet researching I've done didn't back those theories up!

I also went skiing at about 4 months pg, but only when quiet with family all around protecting me from mad skiiers and snowboarders and DS is absolutely fine!!

I wuold go, enjoy the sunshine and the scenery and do whatever you feel up to!!

Poppins1 · 10/02/2008 21:10

Yeah, I went snowboardin for the first time at 7 weeks pg, bit like you in that I was more worried about other skiings etc. If you are afaid and cautious you will be more likely to hurt yourself, me and hubby decided that wot will be will be and if you went by everything you read on the internet, books etc you would never get out of bed.

The only thing i would say is that I was stupidly tired. We had a 5 hr lesson on the first day and I thought I was relatively fit until then. I found it hard to last the day. On the last day I was up on the piste at 10 finish at 12 and spent the rest of the time admiring the views from the cafe.

Just enjoy it! Hope you have a fab time

debinaustria · 10/02/2008 22:41

Go and see how you feel.

Living in a ski resort it's a pretty big part of our life and I thought I would on quiet days etc... but when it came down to it I was too scared of other people and living with the consequences.

mckenzie · 10/02/2008 22:53

I skied when I was about 6 months pregnant with DS. I used caution and common sense, only skied fairly easy runs, kept off the crowded slopes, always stayed with my group and rested lots. My bump meant that my centre of gravity was lower and I skied brilliantly when I was pregnant , much better than before or since!

Enjoy!
