Heart shaped uterus

Hi all
I am currently 9 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child (5th pregnancy). DS was born healthy in 2017.
I am being monitored very closely by my EPU due to a previous ectopic pregnancy.
They are concerned with the position of baby as they are very high in my uterus, quite close to my left tube opening. I’ve been monitored weekly since an ectopic scare at 6 weeks. This week the consultant scanned me and asked me if I had a heart shaped womb - I replied not that I know of. If I do have a heart shaped womb, then all should be fine but the concern is that if I haven’t the pregnancy might grow into my tube and rupture.
Has anyone ever found out with a subsequent pregnancy that they have this? I know this is something you’re born with so my worry is that they are going to tell me the pregnancy isn’t viable (we’ve seen heartbeat since 6 weeks).
I’m praying it is viable but I’m my mind I’m thinking surely this would not have been missed with my previous pregnancies?
Has this happened to anyone else and would you mind sharing the outcome? Thank you x

I’m sorry that you’ve got this worry!
I haven’t been in your situation, but I have done lots of research on bicornuate uteruses (heart shaped) as I found out that I have one when I was scanned at the EPU for bleeding. From the (many, many) things I’ve read, lots of people don’t find out about the shape of their uterus unless there’s a problem. I’ve heard of a few people only finding out when they’ve needed a c section/had bleeding in subsequent pregnancies, as they’re really difficult to diagnose by the time you get to your dating scan. They couldn’t see it on my 12 week scan, but it was clearly bicornuate at 5, 6 and 9 weeks. Fingers crossed for you!

Thank you for your reply! I’m really hoping they are being overly cautious 🙏

Hiya, I've just been for a reassurance scan, there is a small baby and a heartbeat but the sonographer told me I have a heart shaped womb. Cue googling and seeing alot of weird demon womb shaped diagrams 😬😬 I have a booking in appt with my midwife on Tuesday, so I will be letting her know. Is there a chance I'll need extra monitoring? First time being pregnant so not picked up until now!

I’m classed as high risk. Had cervical scans every two weeks from 16 to 24 weeks and now have growth scans booked in at 28, 32, 36 and 39 weeks. Sounds scary, but it’s been smooth sailing in the second trimester, so I’m not too worried.

Gt1986 · 08/04/2023 22:09

@Robin223 will you be likely induced before you reach full term?

Robin223 · 08/04/2023 22:25

Nobody’s mentioned that. Not sure why that would be necessary due to a BU?

Gt1986 · 09/04/2023 06:35

@Robin223 i think it's if the baby is restricted in movement or its tight in there due to the womb shape towards the latter part of the pregnancy. I believe BU may restrict growth also

I was told that I have a bicornuate uterus a few years before pregnancy, after other tests. They were unsure whether it’s also didelph (in two sections). During pregnancy I was given a little extra monitoring (one appt with consultant at 34 weeks) but no extra scans and it was fine. DS came a week early and was breach (c section). He’d been at a funny angle, sort of diagonal, and had run out of room (just over 6lb so not big). C section and monitoring was recommended for future pregnancies, as it seemed like my uterus would probably do the same thing again. This was 7 years ago, and I think scans closer to birth are much more normal now, so it should all be spotted and planned for if you have a similar issue. I imagine inducing labour might then happen but your midwife etc should be able to clarify. Hope it all goes well for you.

@Medenagan thank you for your words, very insightful 😊

Ohhh. My consultant seems to have been focussed on assessing me for risk of preterm labour to this point, so that was my main worry. Perhaps I’ll feel like I have a different risk to focus on when I get to the 28 week scan in a couple of weeks! I think though, from what they’ve said, it’s likely to be fine. Just may need a c section as the baby will have less space to turn, as PP said. It’s been great to have the reassurance of the extra monitoring though. I’m very glad that they’re going to have the chance to catch other things that may not be BU related too.

Im almost 16 weeks now and so far so good. I was discharged from EPU at around 10 weeks when the consultant was confident I actually had a subseptate uterus, rather than bicornuate. I have another check up with the consultant in a couple of weeks but all been fine with scans etc. I believe in my case they want to monitor as 1. I have a fibroid which could block the entrance (or exit I should say) of my cervix which could result in needing a c section but we won’t know until I’m further along how big it’s got and it’s final position. And 2. With a subsuptate uterus as someone else has previously mentioned the baby can run out of room to grow/turn and end up being breach, which again would require c section. Hope everyone is doing ok, it’s so anxiety inducing all this not knowing xx

Hi all, so at my booking in appt the midwife advised she was going to refer me to a consultant due to the bicornuate uterus. But I don't know to what extent the monitoring will be-does it start soon, does it start after 20 weeks etc.

I've had my dating scan date in for 3.5 weeks time and midwife wants to see me on week 16 but that's it so far.

Robin223 · 12/04/2023 15:48

@TreeFloof22 I’m so pleased that things have looked up for you since your OP! Fingers crossed for smooth pregnancies for us all!

@Gt1986 I first saw the consultant at 16 weeks, after my first cervical scan.
