Hi all

I am seeking advice from those who are pregnant and what your morning sickness was like in the first trimester?

I am due to ovulate this week, and if we do conceive, I will be 8 weeks pregnant when we leave for a 4 week holiday in the states. So we are trying to decide whether we give it a go and if we are lucky enough to conceive, I will just deal with the sickness, or does that sound like a terrible idea to those who were sick in the first trimester? The holiday will mainly consist of walking around different places and a mix of flying and driving to different places.

This would be our first so I have no idea how goods/bad my pregnancy would be. I have heard it can be genetic, and when speaking to my mum, her first trimester was just nausea on and off.

TIA.

Everyone experiences the first trimester differently and you have no way to know until you’re in the position. I’m not sure about genetics as some people have one pregnancy with no symptoms and for their the next pregnancy could have HG. So even for the same woman it can vary.

personally I wouldn’t have wanted to as I had 24/7 nausea and was exhausted. I struggled walking to work at one stage! I’m now just over 13 weeks and coming through it (hopefully) but at 8 weeks I felt horrendous. Other people have no symptoms and sail through it.

with My first I had nausea and occasional sickness if I didn’t eat. I had to make sure I had small regular meals. With my second I had absolutely no sickness or nausea. I don’t think it’s genetics, more just luck.

I would put no plans on hold and continue to live as you would normally @LittleMiss2023 - you have no idea if you'll conceive and it can take many months so if you continue to make decisions based on the fact 'you might' be pregnant, you'll end up in a pickle! You'll work it out in the moment if you do conceive and get round it. Most people can still function perfectly well and you just don't know how you'll feel.

Thank you all - I appreciate your replies, I really do. But that’s what I’m figuring - if it happens we’ll just go with the flow and figure it out as we go!

I was on holiday at around 10 weeks and enjoyed it! I wasn't overly sick, just quite tired and my partner was understanding about it all. It's impossible to predict what your morning sickness will be like so I would go ahead and book.

I wouldn't put off TTC for a holiday no.

However I would be cautious about travelling to the states in early pregnancy. Depending on which area you're traveling to, if the worst should happen will you be able to access the appropriate medical treatment? So definitely check that, and make sure your insurance is water tight.

Sorry to be negative, but you just never know.

I went on holiday for a week when I was 9 weeks pregnant and it definitely wasn’t as enjoyable! I had no energy and needed to nap every afternoon, felt really nauseous and was barely eating so couldn’t enjoy any of the food, and struggled in the heat! But I also wouldn’t put off TTC because of a holiday, you have no idea whether you’ll be successful or not yet! Also everyone experiences pregnancy differently, you might be absolutely fine in the first trimester or alternatively get hyperemesis and really struggle! Good luck with TTC and enjoy your holiday xx

I went to the canaries at 9-10 weeks and I was fine. I did have a bit of sickness but my pattern of sickness was feeling nausea briefly first thing in the morning - being sick - then feeling fine after. So it might have been harder if I felt queasy all day. Overall I felt good - but was sad to miss out on the cheapy cocktails and hot tub 😄

I had hyperemesis with my first and very bad nausea with my current pregnancy, starting in week 6 and easing off around week 14. My mum only had mild nausea so I didn't get it from her. There's no way I could have travelled in either pregnancy.

Could you book something that is mostly refundable if you have to cancel? And make sure you get really good insurance that would cover you in case something goes wrong while you are away.
