Morning sickness 7-8 weeks pregnant & phobia of vomiting

Hey all. 29 y/o here 7-8 weeks pregnant and with a huge phobia of vomiting. Growing up I suffered with a condition called Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome [ www.nhs.uk/conditions/cyclical-vomiting-syndrome/ ] which lasted from age of 4 until my late teens. I'm absolutely frightened of it I cannot explain how the sensation of nausea or actually vomiting makes me feel. So far I've had nausea all day everyday for a couple weeks and rarely sick but tonight I vomited quite a bit to the point where I will struggle to eat or drink. And now this time it involves a baby :( anyone else have a fear like me and any tips for how to cope? Are there any meds out there which will not cause any issues with the baby? Thank you.

I'm so sorry you're feeling so poorly. NVP is hard enough without additional factors like emetaphobia.

There are anti-sickness meds that can help though. Check out the website "pregnancy sickness support". I suffer with hyperemesis and this website is a god send. I've had 2 babies whilst heavily medicated for extreme sickness.
They tend to go for a tiered approach.
E.g: start with a first line antiemetic like cyclazine or promethazine, if they work: great. If not they may suggest a second line antiemetic like metaclopramide or ondansetron. (Metaclopramide didn't agree with me, but ondansetron is a life saver). There is a study that links ondansetron and cleft palette. However this has been largely debunked. I've had ondansetron from 4 weeks to term and no ill effects for baby (as have thousands of others).

Find foods that work for you. If you can tolerate jelly and crackers, eat them! I found with my second pg that ice lollies (the really tarte orange juice ones!) helped loads.

Good luck. Please don't suffer in silence. It's so debilitating. Xxx

As someone with a phobia of vomiting too I really sympathise. Definitely get help with it! I got in touch with my gp as soon as I started with morning sickness and they were brilliant. As stated by PP they’ll start you on the lowest level and build up if it doesn’t work for you. I found that having something with a strong flavour (like picked onions or lemon sherbets) helped me feel a little less sick, as did ice lollies. I also found drinking lots of fluids super helpful as it meant the off time I was sick it was much less traumatic.

I hope it passes for you soon! Mine was gone by 13 weeks so fingers crossed you’re nearly over it too 🤞🤞
