Hi, I very sadly am having a miscarriage at 6 weeks with my first pregnancy. I had a scan today due to bleeding and I was advised that the miscarriage is 'incomplete'. I am being scanned again in 2 weeks. I'm currently not bleeding and haven't been for 2 days - has anyone been in this situation? I don't know whether this means I will start to bleed again or not. Emotionally im also all over the place as I have never been pregnant before and I'm anxious about having a healthy pregnancy and baby In the future. If anyone has any happy stories about success after a first miscarriage please let me know, thank you x

@thecoconutcat I’m so so sorry that you’re going through this. I had 2 early miscarriages in a row and then the following cycle I got another bfp and I’m now 12.5 weeks pregnant and had a lovely scan today with everything looking good so far. I have no idea why I had 2 in a row but this one stuck but I am delighted. It definitely doesn’t mean you can’t have a successful pregnancy 💕

So sorry for your loss and what you are going through.

I had a missed miscarriage last April, I found out in a private scan at 9 weeks that it had stopped growing at 6+ weeks. (I then went to the epu). I started to naturally miscarry at 11weeks and then it ended up incomplete 5 weeks after that. I chose to have surgery(erpc) so I could have an ending to it and because my body just couldn’t let go of the retained products. Three months later in August I conceived again and now I’m 28weeks.

That mmc was my first pregnancy, and now this is my second pregnancy. Try to keep hope that it can and hopefully will happen for you. Having a miscarriage doesn’t mean it won’t work out next time. I do understand the worry and concern though, I spent the first 13 weeks (well weeks 4-13) worrying it was going to happen again. But so far it’s ok.

I did pay for an early 9 week scan again for this one. Mostly because I didn’t trust my body to tell me if the pregnancy was still continuing, also apparently if there’s a heartbeat it increases the chance of it continuing. It’s not a guarantee but even seeing the heartbeat at 9 weeks was a new milestone this time and helped me a bit.

Also just to check, usually they do another scan two weeks later to make sure there has been no development. Since you said you are six weeks, are they sure that it’s not just earlier in the pregnancy? Could you be earlier than you think? Some people do have some bleeding and it goes on to work out. Did they see the start of an embryo- fetal pole etc?

I don’t want to get your hopes up, but equally I didn’t ask if they saw anything to suggest it could be that you are earlier than you think?

With mine it was 2.5 weeks behind with no heartbeat. No growth occured between scans and I was sure of the dates give or take a few days.

@thecoconutcat thank you and I hope you get some positive news and your rainbow baby soon too.

Blue2020 · 15/02/2023 23:03

@thecoconutcat I hope it all works out for you in the near future. My friend had a very similar experience in 2021 and she then went on to have a little boy in 2022. I didn’t realise how common miscarriages were until I went through it. Good luck, and again, sorry for your loss.

Can I ask how this went - I had a miscarriage at 6 weeks about 7 weeks ago and was kind of bleeding/spotting whole time so I went to a scan today and there were ‘retained products’ that were vascular but technician said she couldn’t a placenta or anything like that just bits in my lining still getting blood using the Doppler ultrasound. My HCG is like 10 and decreasing. My spotting has stopped and today we saw I’m ovulating. I am scared taking a pill or having a d and c as I’ve only read horror stories but really want my rainbow baby. Not sure what I’m asking I guess some experiences around the retained product. My doctor hasn’t called me yet to tell me what she recommends. Hoping it will come out with my period and that will be that. No one tells you how long miscarriages go on for.

@Mamamia1470 I had an incomplete miscarriage last April, it just wouldn’t end on its own. I opted for the surgery under ga (called erpc which I think is d&c) and I had the surgery last May. I then conceived again in the August and that was a successful pregnancy. I now have a 4 month old baby. The surgery was positive for me.

Sorry for your loss, I hope it all resolved for you soon and you are managing ok through it.

thecoconutcat · 29/08/2023 13:34

@Mamamia1470 I'm sorry for your loss. In the end I had surgery under GA and all went well. It took a further two months from the surgery to get my cycle back to normal and we started TTC then. That was 3 months ago and I'm not yet pregnant again, but medics reassure me it will happen. Frustratingly they count a miscarriage as a pregnancy so it 'resets' the average time to expect a pregnancy back to 1 year again. I hope you are supported to make a decision on what to do xx
