Choosing hospital to give birth - can I insist?

First time mum here, hoping for some advice on rights around choosing where to give birth. We live right on the border of three different healthcare trusts.

At my booking appointment I was told I would be assigned a hospital to give birth, but could choose another one if I wanted to. At about 19 weeks, I phoned my midwife and told her which I'd chosen. It's technically outside my area, but is actually closer, an easier drive, I've been there for other reasons so know it, it's closer to work for my husband in case things happen early, closer to friends and family and is also a well respected teaching hospital.

Midwife told me it was too late and I had to have switched by 16 weeks at the latest and I couldn't switch at 19 weeks. I'm confused by this because all the info I've read says that we can choose where to give birth at any point during pregnancy, and no one told me there was a cut off point. I also tried doing a self referral but this particular hospital don't accept self referrals.

At my 24 week midwife appointment I raised it again and said I really did want to switch. Again was told no, we can't do that because they can't access all your test results etc because a different trust. I mentioned the info I'd read online and was told that ultimately I can just turn up at any hospital and give birth there, they can't turn me away. But that also feels unnecessarily stressful, and doesn't seem to match up with the guidelines.

Has anyone been in a similar position? Is it worth taking it further or just accept it, suck it up and go with the original option? Would welcome some advice from someone who knows more about this or has experienced something similar. Thankyou!

You've probably seen this www.mybirthmychoice.co.uk/during-pregnancy/if-you-wish-to-change-your-choices/

I've not been in your position but I'd be tempted to contact PALS as it appears what the midwife is telling you is wrong.

I was unsure of where I wanted to give birth and my midwife said if I wanted to switch to the other hospital at any point she will support me in that. She even said she would stay in touch but wouldn't officially be my midwife. I really like her so I'm not considering changing.

Perhaps speak to someone higher up in the maternity department and explain it all to them, they might be able to move you over

Well if you just turned up in labour......?!
Seriously for both my DDs I received my mat care at two different London hospitals, but shortly before birth flew to Belfast so they'd get Irish (EU) citizenship. I registered in the main Belfast hospital a few days before birth, and they just had to deal with it.
I don't know specifically about your question, but I imagine if you dig your heels in, make a fuss, contact the new hospital directly, etc, then there'll be leeway.

Perhaps not in your area? But i culd refer anytime and 1-2 pregnancies went late 28 weeks they just did one set of their own bloods and extra scan.
this time iv gone from 1 2 weeks
deffo try higher up
wr have a community triage centre aswell as one midwife in the GP i see every time. The midwife that has sed no? Go to the trust thats linked to her and complain

Thanks all for the suggestions and advice. I think because I don't live in the area for the hospital I want to go to, it makes it a bit more complicated, but I think I have a right to appeal the decision. If I moved house between now and giving birth, it would be a different story, but then I would live closer. No plans to move though!

I think PALS is a good starting point to discuss the options. It just feels that the guidelines say one thing - you can choose where to give birth - but the reality is not as clear.

Quick update - PALS came back with a response from the head of midwifery to say sorry but no, 16 weeks is the cut off. Only option now is to appeal but no idea if that will be successful.
I even told them that I will be coming to that hospital when my labour starts so wouldn't it be better to just plan for it now, rather than have it as a surprise later?!
Just kinda sucks because apparently we have all this choice about care but being stuck between three different trusts means that in reality, we don't have a choice at all as there's only one hospital we can go to.
