Hi everyone, I started a job as a teaching assistant back in September and found out in December that i'm pregnant. We are currently 11 weeks after 3 previous losses before applying for position.

We never expected to get this lucky (although still early days) and had started to come to terms with not having anymore children so although it's very much wanted it wasn't as such planned.

Im just feeling very anxious about telling the school in case they feel like i'm a time waster etc. If all goes well, I would have completed a while academic year before going on maternity.

How and when do you think it best to let the school know? Due to previous losses I am advised to have a CVS and the results for that can take 2 weeks.

Thanks in advance

I am in the same boat! 9+2 and started at my current school in September. I also accepted an additional role in early December, thinking I wouldn’t be able to get pregnant…. I can’t offer much advice as it’s my first, after 12 weeks I was planning to ask my line manager what to do as she had a baby a few years ago. I’m going to let them know sooner next half term for sure and earlier rather than later so they have as much time as possible to hire maternity cover - im a science teacher too so we are different to hire. Almost feel like I should apologise and let them know that I didn’t realise I would get pregnant when I accepted the role, but I know I have to stop myself saying that as there’s nothing wrong with what I have done!

I would say it’s more than fine to wait for the results of your cvs. And (what I’m telling myself), if they form opinions against you for getting pregnant then they are in definitely in the wrong and shouldn’t be respected anyway. Hopefully also there’s enough senior staff who know from experience that pregnancy can’t be perfectly planned!

@Lhdale thanks so much for your reply. It's an anxious time being pregnant as it is without having to worry about work etc. I feel the same like I almost need to apologise or justify myself. It's silly really and they hired me knowing that I have a toddler and wanted the job to fit around family life, so they must have thought there was a chance I'd be having another soon.

Congratulations on the pregnancy, how have you been feeling?

@Stargazer89 congrats to you too! No apologies and no justification💪! I’ve been incredibly anxious, haven’t had any losses but have been bedbound with illness for two years up until last summer so really have no belief my body can get things right. It must be infinitely harder after having experiencing losses so I have utmost respect for anyone that can handle the anxiety.

this week and last the exhaustion has been awful, I have an hour commute each way on three different trains + the teaching on my feet all day, it’s a struggle! Today I dropped a test tube with acid in it in front of the whole class as I was demonstrating how to work safely 😂

how are you doing? And when will your cvs happen?

Stargazer89 · 09/02/2023 19:36

@Lhdale week 9 was a killer for me too with feeling completely exhausted. So I can sympathise with you on that one. Also sounds so tough having that commute on top of a full day teaching. So dropping a test tube is fully acceptable lol. Hope you manage to get time to rest too. I did teaching before having my first but don't think I could hack it now.

My CVS is actually tomorrow but they have said that there is a possibility they won't be able to do it if the placenta isn't in an ideal place. I'm still 50/50 on wether I'm still actually pregnant because after week 10 my symptoms have seemed to have vanished. Will find out tomorrow atleast.

Good luck! I’ve read that it’s fairly common for symptoms to disappear around 10 weeks as the placenta takes over so hopefully all still fine!
