Hi,so I just found out I'm pregnant with my 3rd baby yesterday! I'm about 4 and a half weeks pregnant.

I have had 2 healthy pregnancies before but in September 2019 I got pregnant whilst on the pill unexpectedly and after a few weeks of problems and scans and blood tests they said I had a pregnancy of unknown location, they just couldn't find a pregnancy and my blood levels weren't dropping,by the time I should have been about 6 weeks I was getting awful pains in the sides of my back which I knew wasn't normal as I had never experienced that with my 2 normal pregnancies,so they treated it as an ectopic and gave me 2 injections.

I am thinking of booking an early scan at a private clinic, at the hospital I was under last time the nurse told me I would have to have a scan next time just to confirm things are in the right place. i did an online v consult with my gp yesterday to let them know I was pregnant and the issues I had last time with the pregnancy of unknown location and my concerns, but the receptionist just gave me the self referral to the midwives which I put through last night.

I'm not sure whether I would be able to get a early scan under the nhs just to confirm things are going OK this time ans not ectopic or anything. My oldest is 7 and my youngest is almost 6 so it's been quite a while since I've gone through all this.

I know early scans don't mean everything is OK and things could still go wrong, but I've found a private place online which do early scans for £45 so I was thinking just to book a scan for around 2 and a half weeks time when I should be around 6 and a half / 7 weeks just to mainly check the pregnancy is in the right place as I'm starting to get worried now after last time.

Would you say it's worth it to book the scan or just wait until I've spoken to the midwife? Or just wait and watch and see how things go ?

Any advice would be appreciated!!

The NHS recommend a scan about 6-8 weeks to check everything is where it should be, so I wouldn't book a private scan if you're going to be offered one anyway.

The midwife should be able to book you in for an early scan once you speak to them.

I would if I was you! I had one recently at 8 weeks.

I'm pregnant with my first after only 2 months of trying and couldn't shake the feeling that things were too good to be true (I'm in my mid 30s and come from a long maternal line of difficulties conceiving).

It doesn't hurt to have an early scan and will definitely give you a piece of mind! You might be offered one if you've already had an ectopic pregnancy ( a friend did so they could check things early to make sure they were okay).

I would it will give you peace of mind, although I think you'll need to wait until your around 6-7 weeks, any earlier and you might not see a heart beat etc which could just cause more worry.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I have done the self referral for the on Monday so I am just waiting to hear back. I think I remember last time my booking appointments with the midwife were at around 8 weeks, so I think I'm just going to wait for a couple of weeks and if I don't hear anything by then I'll just book the private scan in for the end of February when I should be about 7 weeks just to be on the safe side that the pregnancy is in the right place. I think in the meantime I'll just wait an keep an eye on it and if I get any symptoms like I did last time of the ectopic I'll go back to the gp. Hopefully I will hear back from the midwife soon before then though so I can speak to them about it!!
