When did you start your pelvic floor exercises?

And how many did you do a day?

I got all enthusiastic about it about a month ago and was doing loads (well I think it was loads, I was trying to do 200 a day) but I just realised I haven't done any for about a month!

Do pelvic floor muscles just stop you from weeing, or are they actually needed for other things as well?

Ha, it's not just me that ran off to see if I could stop peeing mid-flow then! I can do it too but I think I'll still do the exercises just to be on the safe side, taking an extra set of clothes out for the LO is one thing but taking them out for yourself as well it taking it too far, haha!

50 a day seems the general recommended amount, so five everytime you're on mumsnet should do it! Am doing them now, and wish I had done more previously! MW's go on and on about them, but by god they're right.

saralou · 09/02/2008 11:03

i do pf exercises every day and have never leaked when i cough or sneeze!

start them when you'r young so you don't have problems when you get older, easy!

but then i have seen complete uterine prolapses, i agree with belgo, once you've seen that you will do exercises every day!

lollipopmother · 09/02/2008 11:34

What actually happens with a uterine prolapse, it's conjouring horrible visions of someone's uterus litterally falling out of their body, which I know can't be right (God I HOPE it can't be right!!!)

I once helped a vet push a cows uterus back in after a still birth of a calf. (school work experience was SO much fun) And I can truly say it was the most messy, weird thing I ever had to do. Like pushing/stuffing a giant water balloon into a golf ball hole. I dunno if thats the way it happens to humans, but ifs anything like it... then its WELL scary Lolli. I mean REALLY scary.

-hides and tries to do more pelvic floors-

ThePFJ · 09/02/2008 16:59

Oh, the cow did live. But she wasn't a happy camper.

belgo · 09/02/2008 17:23

PFJ - if that doesn't get all mumsnetters who are reading this to doing their pelvic floor exercises, I don't know what will!!!

saralou · 09/02/2008 19:41

if you feel brave enough google images, type in prolapse and it comes up with some pretty horrific pictures!

it's not pretty, i will never forget the first time i had to shave a lady with a uterine prolapse... i was not prepared for what i saw!

ThePFJ · 09/02/2008 20:38

Ok. Just googled. Am now trying not to be ill. Am having cow flash backs now. The really BIG one hanging out of the lady 8th pic in.. that was what the cow's was like.
You know... Me AND the vet had to insert our arms up to our elbows to push that thing all the way back in properly. And I DIDNT get gloves to wear.

-is.....

saralou · 09/02/2008 21:15

i didn't even notice that the first time.

i'm speechless.

why did i re-look.

debinaustria · 09/02/2008 22:03

OMG, I just had to look, now wish I hadn't , I'm trying may hardest to do the pelvic floor exercises at red lights like someone said, and whenever I'm on here.

ThePFJ · 09/02/2008 22:19

You know... if I weren't so terrified, this would be funny.

lollipopmother · 10/02/2008 12:51

I refuse to look, feel sick just thinking about it, I thought I was being silly to think your uterus could actually fall out!

your uterus doesn't just fall out though! most of the ladies i've looked after who have a complete prolapse will have had problems for years that they've never seeked out help for, because of fear or embarassment. they've always known something was 'coming down'.

and often it's a urine retention or constipation or some kind of sepsis that has brought them into hospital, still not the actual prolapse!
