Don't want to ring the doctor and find conflicting advice on the web. Unutterably unbearable headache / pressure eyeache. How is it safe to treat it?

paracetamol. I also find that stick called 4head quite useful

Don't want to alarm you - but when was your blood pressure last checked, how many weeks pregnant are you?

VintageGardenia · 07/02/2008 16:28

I am 14 weeks and my blood pressure would have been checked about 4 weeks ago. It was raised slightly but the doctor said that might have been due to anxiety (I was pretty nervous going in to him). I used to get migraines but they stopped about a year ago after I did acupuncture and changed my diet a bit.

I have a tiny roll-on stick called Migrastick - it's herbal things like menthol and you roll it on your temples - but it hasn't worked.

Why do you ask about bp?

at the stage you're at it should be fine - but in later pregnancy headache can be a sign of high blood pressure and needs to be checked. If this is worse than your normal level of headaches iyswim then maybe call the midwife/GP?

VintageGardenia · 07/02/2008 16:36

Phew I thought you were going to say something dreadful NorthernLurker I've been frantically refreshing and refreshing my browser till your response came up!

It's worse than normal but not worse than it would have been in my migraine days. I'll try some paracetamol or the co-odamol (never heard of that one) and if no luck will talk to GP.

Thank you all.

oh no - I really didn't mean to scare you! Just if you'd said you were 35 weeks say - I would have been ordering you to the hospital Hope you feel better soon

im taking paracetamol and am 25wks pregnant with umbilical hernia the docs wont do anything till after baby born and told me take paracetamol but it dont help sometimes cos im still in pain 4-5hrs later after taking it.

whomovedmychocolate · 07/02/2008 20:41

Paracetomol up to 1000mg four times a day is okay.

BTW you aren't supposed to use roll on methol sticks during pregnancy - not sure why I just remember being told not to last pregnancy. I think the essential oils are teratogenic.

VintageGardenia · 07/02/2008 20:43

Oh dear I have used the menthol stick loads for minor headaches - even though it's meant for migraines - I am off to look up teratogenic and find out what that means!!

Take paracetamol and try lying down in calm dark room and practice relaxation breathing.
A few drops of lavender oil on pillow help focus breathing and soothe.
Basically, all the above is just a good gimmick to get you to relax and sleep it off.
take care.

slim22 · 07/02/2008 20:44

And get off the computer, the glare will give you a headache!

PaulaYatesbiggestFan · 07/02/2008 20:46

i have these atm vintage and am putting it down to anaemia

no way on earth would i take co codamol in pregnancy due to killer constipation

i dont like to bother doc/midwife but in your case i think i would this is maybe not the beast tie to self diagnose

whomovedmychocolate · 07/02/2008 20:54

Have you tried a cold compress or one of those gel filled eye masks. They help me when I get headaches.

BTW headaches at this point in pregnancy are often down to the extra blood volume going round your body - they do ease once you get used to it.

NorthernLurker · 07/02/2008 23:15

Don't look up teratogenic!
Many, many things are advised against use in pregnancy - not because they are demonstrably dangerous - but because they have not been proved to be safe. It just isn't possible to test stuff on 'real' mums and babies.
