How do I know baby is okay?- 4weeks

I’m pregnant with baby #2 😍

Before baby #1 I had 2 miscarriages. One of them was a missed miscarriage at around 10weeks.
I’ve spoken to a midwife and she said I won’t get an early scan unless I have bleeding (like I did both miscarriages and baby#1 ) or if I pay for a private scan.
My partner & I don’t want to pay £60 just to be told there’s no heartbeat…

But how will I know baby is okay / alive from now up until the first scan at 12 weeks? I’m only 3/4 weeks now so it’s a while to wait, not knowing.

If there’s not any obvious miscarriage signs like bleeding- how does a midwife/ doctor determine if the pregnancy is going as it should?
Do they do routine blood tests or anything before 12 weeks?
If so when should I expect this?

I obviously didn’t experience anything routine with baby#1 and previous pregnancies as I had scans at 6/7 weeks which either showed heartbeat or no heartbeat.

I hope this makes sense?

Any advice would be appreciated- thank you!

It is hard the first weeks of not knowing and waiting for the scan. I suppose all you can do is monitor your symptoms...morning sickness still there, boobs hurting, maybe test every few days to check it's positive

@Hibye23289 I've been testing and I've got good line progression.

But I don't have many symptoms. I had HG with baby 1 and both miscarriages, even when baby wasn't alive. So it's not really reliable 😩

Apart from paying for an early scan sadly there's not much you can do. I've always got an early one about 8 weeks, they're around £50 near me. But I appreciate they're not for everyone.

It is awful :( I think I remember starting to relax when my symptoms geared up somewhat. But like you say, they're not always reliable either.

Sending love. Xxx

Just to reassure you I had virtually no symptoms during my pregnancy and had a healthy DD a month ago. In contrast, I had quite strong early symptoms in the pregnancy that resulted in early miscarriage, so you’re right not to put much stock in symptoms as an indicator.

I found booking an early scan at 8wks really helped with the anxiety, and trying to take each day as it comes (which I know is easier said than done!)

Unfortunately there’s nothing you can do. There are no blood tests to check or anything else until your 12 week scan. Those first 12 weeks are the absolute worst. I paid for a scan with my second because I had no symptoms and just needed to see something.

Honestly, you won't know, I found it hard but trusted as much as I could. I also waited the 12 weeks rather than went for an early scan because I knew people can get good news at early scans and then not good news at 12 weeks - I felt if I waited until 12 weeks, the chance of miscarriage has gone way down and if all looked good I could relax. Wishing you the very best
