Quorn vegan ham in pregnancy

Hi all!

I'm 17+2 pregnant with my rainbow baby and I must admit I’m a bit paranoid about food.
I recently bought Quorn’s vegan smoked ham and I was wondering if it’s safe to eat in pregnancy? I know it doesn’t contain any meat, so I was wondering if there might be something else in the ingredients that it may be dangerous.
Also, does anyone know if soya based products are ok once in a while? I read it’s better avoid them, but I had vegan sausages made with soya a couple of times and craving them today, so I was wondering if it’s ok like once in a month?

Gently, you're massively overthinking this. All of those things are fine. Good luck with your pregnancy. :)

It’s absolutely fine and you don’t have to limit soya either. What you do need to limit or avoid is honestly such a small list.

The NHS list has everything you need to know

It's fine to eat. Keep to the nhs guidelines if you're anxious.

Thank you all for your replies! I confess, I’m a professional overthinker!
But yesterday I had the sausages and enjoyed them 😋

Agree that you should stick with the NHS list - I think you can find a website for every food saying it's not safe in pregnancy!

Yes, I had look at the NHS list but it’s not very specific about all foods, so I tend to be extra careful with what’s not on the list. For example I couldn’t see anything on vegan food. I’m not vegan, but I like it and was happy to find alternatives to what I should avoid for now (like ham), but a bit unsure about the ingredients used to make this kind of food.

This is the third odd thread about vegan food I’ve read today. 🤔

Honeybee1989 · 31/01/2023 14:36

Odd?

There isn’t anything on vegan food on the NHS list because most of the things that are recommended to avoid are animal products. So rare meat, non lion marked eggs, pate etc. I had a healthy vegan pregnancy and didn’t avoid anything apart from kombucha because it’s not pasteurised. My baby is 7 months and thriving!

It’s fine - personally I’d never eat such a highly processed food but your choice.

What an unnecessary comment to someone who is already feeling anxious and is just looking for help/reassurance. Your personal preferences have no bearing on this.

You don’t need to worry about things that aren’t on the list. If they’re not on the list then by virtue of that they’re ok to eat 🙂 vegan food isn’t on the list because there’s nothing that’s vegan that you can’t have. Most of the concerns are around certain kinds of meat and dairy, and even then it’s not as much as you’d think.

BuffaloCauliflower · 31/01/2023 15:48

You also don’t need to avoid ham, it’s fine to eat. Here’s what it says on the NHS website

What you can eat

  • meats such as chicken, pork and beef, as long as they're well-cooked with no trace of pink or blood; be especially careful with poultry, pork, sausages and burgers
  • cold, pre-packed meats such as ham and corned beef

Fine
I am veggie and lactose intolerant - drank soya milk all the way through both pg, and ds and dd seem to have developed to puberty quite normally.
