Mat allowance and NI credits

Hi everyone, I'm a FTM, baby is due in April and because I'll have been at my job only 5 months they aren't paying me mat pay, so I'm applying for mat allowance instead.

My question is around national insurance credits. I won't get any child benefit as my partner earns over the threshold, but does anyone know if I should still apply and then would I get national insurance credits still applied to me for my pension in later life? Ideally I don't want to go a year without building up any pension credits so I'm guessing this is the best thing to do...

I can't find much info online about it so any advice appreciated.
