Elective c section

Hi all,

Booked in for elective c section next Thursday for the PM list. I've been told that they perform 3 electives that afternoon and the surgeon on the day will decide what order to do them on the day. What reasons might some women take priority prover others just out of curiosity...can you tell I'm terrified 😳👶🏼

I had EMCS . Was Am which I was pleased about . Was scheduled second but Ended up being first as the first patient was allergic to latex !
I guess if someone is higher risk they might try and deliver these babies first ! I have no idea but I just wanted to say it was the calmest , most wonderful experience. I was so scared. They played music . I held my husbands hand and the team were amazing. I was at home in 2 days and walking on the sea front by day 5. I have healed so well. Good luck ! Now pregnant with dc2 and I’ve already booked my c section as I’d not have it any other way now xxxx

I was the last of the three to go in on my day. Straightforward pregnancy, no underlying health issues on my end. The other two women had blood pressure issues, or something along those lines. They do the riskiest ones first. It was stressful having to wait my turn but you'd be amazed how quickly they get through them!

soggydigestives · 27/01/2023 16:16

It's in order or risk, if it doesn't matter too much for your baby to be born a day later you'll be last on the list. I was last, but the woman before me was diabetic and had issues with her surgery so they took ages. I eventually went in around tea time after them debating whether or not to do mine the next day, but thankfully they decided to do it.

babynoname22 · 27/01/2023 16:20

I had ELCS due to previous birth trauma. I was last on the list. Went down about 4pm. He was born at 4.55pm. It was an absolute breeze!! So good and good recovery. I think because I had a difficult time first time I was amazed I could feel so 'well' after second time. Good luck.

helloimnew123 · 27/01/2023 16:20

It will be health issues that will prioritise the list.

I had gestational diabetes and I was first in the morning because you have to be nil by mouth and not eating has a big impact on your blood sugar levels.

FindingMyselfIn2023 · 27/01/2023 16:26

I was also last down, as I had an easy pregnancy and no health issues.

The first woman down was getting her tubes tied during the surgery, the second woman had blood pressure issues and she was overweight (I heard her explaining to her DH that her weight was a factor.)

allfurcoatnoknickers · 27/01/2023 16:29

I was last for my ELCS because I had a breech baby, but was otherwise 100% healthy. My friend had cholestasis, so she was first on the list for an ELCS as it was much more urgent, but not urgent enough for an EMCS.

We both had super chilled out easy experiences.

Gilm0reGirl · 27/01/2023 16:43

I’m going to have to have a ELCS and I was just wondering, ladies who were last or late afternoon, how did you find that first night?

My DD was a late EMCS, I wasn’t on the ward until nearly 10pm, and I didn’t get catheter out until the following afternoon, I had two IVs and a drain and could not move. The night team was absolutely useless, I barely saw them and I still have nightmares.

I’m at a different hospital this time but I know I’ll be classed as a category 4 c-section (providing nothing goes wrong) as although I have to have one due to the type of incision from my first, I have no reason to be ahead of someone with GD, blood pressure issue, Placenta Previa etc.

So how did you find being last on the list/late afternoon? I’m worried of a repeat and lots of people have said how much better planned is, which I get, but it is that first night if I am alone with no help unable to move again that’s worrying me.

thismeansnothing · 27/01/2023 16:48

I was first on the list for an elective. Was going to be 8:30/9:30am

Several emergencies later I went down at 4:30pm and was very nearly cancelled.

thismeansnothing · 27/01/2023 16:50

As for being later in the day I went into a recovery room for about an hour/90mins for tea and toast and they did all the new baby checks there. Then went up to the ward for something proper to eat because I'd been nil by mouth for nearly 24hours. Spinal wore off quite quick but they decided to keep the catheter in till the morning and it was took out first thing then I was up and about.

I stopped in for three days but that was more that I wasn't happy with DDs feeding than anything else.

Treacletoots · 27/01/2023 16:55

I was first on the list as I had cholestasis and pre eclampsia risk as blood pressure rocketed.

Once they started, an EMCS tried to bump me but they said, once they've started they need to continue, good job really because I lost a lot of blood and had a few complications and half way through someone managed to trigger the fire alarm in the baby unit so my recovery immediately after was outside briefly!

Best decision you'll ever make. Recovery was a breeze.

TeddyTrucks · 27/01/2023 17:09

First was emergency early morning so no issues with other mums. Second was an elective, 2 of us booked in, we both waited for ages then she went first - no indications why, it was just how it was. I was a lot more relaxed about it having had one before which was much more traumatic but I can imagine if it's your first it could feel awful DaffodilFlowers

CostaDelPatio · 27/01/2023 17:16

The trust where I had my ELCS perform them on a different floor in main theatres so you don’t cross over with emergencies on the labour ward floor. I know of a woman who was put first on the list due to a previous stillborn, I could never envy her meeting her LO first

highdrylowerwetter · 27/01/2023 17:56

Maternal requests usually go last

High BMI/placenta previa /diabetics/patients with significant mental health histories /multiples usually get done earlier in the day mostly because they're more urgent or difficult to do out of hours

It really does depend on what comes in though

Good luck!

Namechange192727171 · 27/01/2023 18:04

Depends on who comes in etc.

I had gestational diabetes but DD wasnt born til afternoon. I assume due to emergencies etc.

Masterofcats · 27/01/2023 18:13

I was first on list as high cardiac risk for me. ( childhood chemotherapy).
Had a fantastic birth, very nice experience all ok and breastfed whilst being sawn up. I have now had 3 and honestly I have the best memories of all 3 births.
The list goes on priority of risk.
Good luck don't be scared.

mondaytosunday · 27/01/2023 19:47

My waters broke ten days before I was due to have a section on medical grounds. I was not in active labour however. The hospital said they were very busy and I'd have to wait til morning, unless I went it to active labour - so that's one reason I'd 'bump' someone else.

Thesystemonlydreamsintotaldarkness · 27/01/2023 19:52

Before me, it was twins and a lady with diabetes. I had gestational diabetesx

Krakenes · 27/01/2023 20:03

I was booked in for an elective but went into labour 5 days before. I was there by 3pm, had to wait for a slot and was done by 7pm. I expect it’s cases like me that bump people out. To echo a PP it was a magical experience, music, latched in theatre. Would definitely do it again, healed in no time at all!

BCxx · 27/01/2023 20:04

I was last as I was really low risk. Was told diabetics always go first then anyone with any complications with blood pressure etc. My friend got to go first and it was her first section, low risk but had a very traumatic previous birth. I was nearly moved up the list as a covid result for someone else hadn’t come back in time but it ended up coming back just as I was about to be taken in.

The wait was the worst bit (and only bad bit) of the entire thing! Honestly it was the best day of my life. I was so so scared before it, never been so scared of anything but actually even before the operation part had started and I was just lying on the table numb I was completely fine. The staff were making jokes and I was laughing. I just didn’t involve myself with anything going on the other side of the curtain 😂 the moment they put the curtain down and I saw my son lifted up was the best moment ever. I don’t know if il ever match it, even when I have another 🙈 good luck, have the best day and try to enjoy it!

Dogsandbabies · 27/01/2023 21:17

My first section I went last. I was young and it was my first section with no complications. Second I had to remove an ovary so I took priority and went first. My third section I was sure I would be first but a woman with an allergy to anaesthetic took priority so I went second.

I am about to have my fourth section (coupled with tube tying) and I expect I will go first.

Loz1093 · 27/01/2023 21:37

Thank you all for the replies. Put my mind at some what ease. This is my second c section 1st was EMCS after being in labour for 26 hrs prior to it all, I cannot remember a thing!!
I'm super excited to meet our 2nd DD. But I'm absolutely terrified. From the spinal, to just about remembering how freezing cold I was in theatre. Roll on Thursday and hope and pray I'm first on the list for the afternoon. I feel hangry just thinking about it now 😂
I do have slightly higher bmi with this one, low papp A and it's being questioned with the surgeon via consultant if my umbilical hernia can be fixed that I got after 1st baby can be fixed. We shall see. X

Can you just request a CS? I’m 40 and my other births have been natural but I don’t think I have the energy to labour this time.
