Weight gain in first trimester

I'm currently 11w 5d pregnant and weighed myself yesterday and I have put on 11lbs. My bmi before falling pregnant was 25 (so just on the boarder of healthy / overweight) but my bmi would now be almost obese (27).
This is my first pregnancy and I can't tell if I'm showing early or if it's because I have gotten very big. I had a MMC which was detected at my 13 weeks scan and the baby had stopped growing at 12weeks back in June.
I'm feeling really pathetic as the weight gain is really bringing me down even though the priority is to have a healthy baby. Is this weight gain normal? I have been eating a lot more carbs (plain boiled pasta with cheese) as that's all I can handle but I'm now trying to add in more veg.

Quite normal - if you’ve been feeling sick or tired then you have to do all you can to help that, and for a lot of people it’s plain carbs (crisps, peanuts and babybels for me!). If you maintain a healthy diet and exercise from as soon as you feel more up to it then it should all even out. Don’t get hung up on your BMI, especially not whilst pregnant.

Depends on lots of things, some people are very sick the first trimester and lose weight and then they make up for it over the rest of the pregnancy.

You technically don't need anything extra in the first trimester, and about 200-300 calories extra a day in your second, and 500
Ish in your third, which isn't loads.

That said, very hard when you're starving and don't want certain things but you can tolerate all the naughty stuff.

My suggestion is that you chat to your midwife about the recommended weight gain for your pregnancy weight, and they might refer you to a dietitian to give you suggestions on meals and calorie intake.

While people say it doesn't matter what you eat while pregnant it kind of does, uncontrolled calorie intake can mean a bigger baby, gestational diabetes, higher blood pressure etc.

Not trying to scare you, I'm sure its fine but it would be good to get a handle on it to make sure you and baby are as healthy as can be.

Congratulations on your pregnancy xx

Thank you for responding. Yes I have been extremely tired but I try to fit in a 30min walk a few times a week but the cold weather hasn't helped. Prior to falling pregnant I was very active but I'm anxious about over doing it so have been taking it easy.
Hopefully it all even out by the second trimester.
Hope your pregnancy goes well :)

I've been put off a lot of food but the only thing I can stomach is carbs and cheese.
Thank you I will speak to my midwife. I'm extremely worried about getting gestational diabetes as my sister had it with her third pregnancy and my mum has type 2, so I'm already at risk of developing it.
You're not scaring me and I like the honest transparent advice. Thank you xxx

I gained a similar amount during my first trimester but have since lost it and then some. Currently is second trimester. It can swing and then build back up. Was so fucking bloated during the first 12 weeks. Thank god that's stopped now. Yes, I'm so totally blaming the bloat, nothing to do with the carb monster I was.

If you're unsure speak to your midwife.

That helps to know someone else also gained similar amounts during first trimester and nice to hear that it balanced out. Haha I'm sure the bloat plays a massive role in this, I've never been this bloated before!

Have to admit I only put on a couple of lbs in my first trimester.
Try experimenting with different kinds of protein to see what healthier options might fill you up.
Also a good idea to have at least half a pint of water before each meal.
It sounds like you are really motivated to make some healthy choices for the sake of you and your baby so that's really positive. Best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

I’ve known women who have gained one stone and women who have gained 4 stone in pregnancy…there really is no normal. We all have different sized babies, starting weights and sensitivity to hormones. So please don’t get too hung up on it - it sounds as though you feel rubbish enough already with morning sickness! It’s difficult to change the diet with nausea, perhaps trying to keep up light exercise would help with your overall well-being x

I gained 4 stone in my last pregnancy, 2 stone in my first trimester. I would say your weight gain is pretty normal. I somehow managed to put on 2 stone between 6 weeks and 12 weeks 😳 No weight gain at all in the second trimester then starting piling on the pounds again in the third. Oh and my baby was small, the weight was all me 😂

That's the thing, lots of women are so sick they can only stomach simple carbs which obviously are responsible for weight gain. Plus there comes cravings. I'm 8 weeks and this pregnancy is so different to previous ones. I don't feel sick, eat as before or even get hungry more often. Luckily all I crave is sour stuff like salted cucumbers, grapefruit, lemon etc and as previously yellow cheese lover I can eat only white dairy now like cottage cheese, spreedable cheeses, natural yogurts. I have been keto/ low carb for many years, so far carb monster didn't come back. I eat more bread but it's my homemade keto low carb recipe so my carb intake didn't raise that rapidly. As long as we manage to control carb and sugar cravings we shouldn't put too much weight during pregnancy. First trimester is always most tricky as rapid increase in progesterone causes havoc in metabolism. Not only cravings but also constipation, bloating, water retention etc often getting impression that we are bigger than should be at this stage.
