Food aversions - 8 weeks

By my calculations I should be 8 weeks pregnant today - for the past couple of weeks I've been off my normal food, which is concerning as I usually eat a fairly healthy and balanced diet. I don't eat meat (I do eat fish) so get a lot of iron and protein from pulses and veg, however I am finding I just can't eat my usual meals. I am stomaching as much as I can and I haven't been physically sick yet but the aversions and nausea is real.

I know everyone is different, but has anyone found ways to try and keep some healthy foods in their diet whilst experiencing aversions to their normal food? I'm trying to have a smoothie each day, although usually feel quite nauseous afterwards - but at least it's staying down....for now.

I'm really tired at the moment and sleeping long hours, so wondering if iron is low as a result of the above, or just the pregnancy, or a mixture of the two.

I'm usually one to plan my meals and do one weekly shop but it's out of the window at the moment. Just sitting down to write my shopping list and found myself researching MN instead 🙂

Why are our bodies rejecting the nutrients we are told we need? It's so bizarre.

I haven't had the booking date through yet to speak to a midwife about all this so in the meantime, just hoping for some hints and tips and to say if anyone is going through similar, I feel you.

I just took vitamins and ate what I could manage. When the food aversions subside you can eat more healthily but for now baby will get all they need from you

My healthy eating became less of a priority in the first trimester. Sounds awful saying it! It wasn't like I imagined but I just ate what I could keep down, or what wouldn't make me nauseated. I think I ate lots of cucumber and lots of toast. 😂

@GoT1904 @georgarina thank you, both. I knew I wasn't alone as I've read through some previous threads from around a year ago too.. Will just continue to eat what I can. It's the planning ahead that's so hard but as long as everything is ok, I'm happy to do an extra trip or two to the shops if needed.
I'm definitely not complaining at all, just thought I'd put it out there in case of any advice.
Thanks again🙂x

I just ate whatever I could (mainly anything beige). It does get better, by 16 weeks my normal diet returned. Being fed I figured, was more important than driving myself into a fatigued frenzy!

As a severe sickness suffer I’ve been hospitalised with sickness. Consultants have always said the baby will take everything they want from you (like a parasite) and any calories are good calories. Basically eat what ever you fancy. I lived off full fat coke and McDonald’s chips. I don’t think I ate at fruit or veg for the first 20 weeks!

I just ate Jacobs high fibre crackers by the packet.... I really struggled to eat much else, once you start feeling better you can get some more nutrients down you, but first trimester is just about eating what you can manage. It's also when the pregnancy tiredness is at its worst, I went away during my first pregnancy at eight weeks on a romantic break and spent a whole day in bed sleeping, it was amazing lol

So useful to hear. I'm lucky it's not 100% of the time and comes in fairly strong waves (usually in the lead up to meal times), so during the better times I will just have to get as much in as I can.
Thanks everyone.. I trust it will pass

I gradually went off everything. Could only stomach beige carbs. Burst into tears in Tesco cos couldn't even stomach pizza. Vegan Greek yog was a godsend and smoothies. Just eat what u can, when you can. It gets better in 2nd trim xx

Eat whatever you want/can stomach don't force yourself to eat things that are making you feel ill. I take pregnacare it has all the vitamins baby needs. I'm a firm believer in if I'm craving it then that's what the baby needs, my last baby needed lots of cream buns and pizza 😂😂

I ate a crumpet any time I felt sick. Actually having an empty stomach made me feel more nauseous so had to eat little and often. I figured it was better than eating biscuits all the time. Listen to your body and eat/drink what it tells you too (mine had very strong opinions 😂).

Thanks everyone. I think the key for me is to try and eat something/anything as soon as I feel it coming on.. in order to try and keep it as much at bay as possible ....and also not to give myself a hard time
