When to buy baby things?

When do you expectant mums start buying things for the baby? My niece is 19 weeks and has already got the pram, cot, bottles, clothes, wardrobe, drawers, car seat and bath. I wonder if that's usual to have everything halfway through a pregnancy?

I didn't have anything at all until at about 29 weeks when I bought a baby grow 😂 it actually became a running joke in the family and some thought I was in denial about being pregnant, but I just didn't feel the need to buy a load of stuff I might not need when Amazon and 24 hour Tescos exist 🤣

I got the pram and car seat at about 34 or 35 weeks? Plus ordered the cot which arrived when I was about 36 weeks. I just bought a pack of newborn baby grows and vests from Sainsburys and then ordered more vests and baby grows when she'd arrived (we didn't know if we were having a boy or girl, so then ordered some pink and purple vests etc when she'd been born)

Someone I know had decorated the entire nursery and spent about £5K on baby stuff before they were 9 weeks pregnant which just made me feel a bit nervous in all honesty, but then I'm a bit superstitious or whatever about these things.

I bought loads after my 20 week scan. Its excitement, making it feel real

Pollywoddles · 21/01/2023 23:16

I didn’t buy anything until 33 weeks.

I am awaiting the travel system because it was on offer. 20 week scan in 2 weeks so if worst happens will be within 30day period to return. Too worried to purchase anything else

firsttimelondonmummy · 22/01/2023 13:13

@WhatDoYouWantNow your niece sounds nice and organised like me!
I’m 18+3 and have my cot, pram and travel set and a range of clothes.
You buy whenever feels right for you 😊
No right or wrong answer.

Thanks, all. I've bought some blankets, towels, nappies and clothes for the baby. (it's a girl)

We moved house at 28 weeks so it didn’t make sense to get any big items before then and have to move them again. I started buying very rapidly thereafter though.

Emmamoo89 · 22/01/2023 15:32

Once past 12 week scan got nappies and wipes. Past 20 week scan everything else x

Currently 15w and nothing yet. Will start pram hunting after 20w scan, as I want to buy second hand. Then we will see. Firstly, husband needs to clean his mess to make room for baby stuff, otherwise we will drown in it like some hoarders.

shangelawasrobbed · 23/01/2023 09:56

We didn't start shopping for stuff until I was 31-32 weeks - a decision which I massively regretted when my little one came early at 34 weeks and the only thing we'd ordered (and not even collected) was a pram! In hindsight, I wish we'd started shopping a little earlier, maybe after the 20 week scan.

Nadinya · 23/01/2023 11:38

Currently 18 weeks and have just ordered the pram and carseats cause it was an amazing offer. Everything else will slowly start trickling in after the 20 week scan.

Nursery stuff we're waiting till we've bought the house (or until my stresslevels can't take it and I've ordered them for the old house)

I am surprised when anyone buys before the 20 week scan but I have known quite a few women who have had late miscarriages and terminations for medical reasons so I guess I am naturally more cautious

I've seen late misccariages and stillborns way later, at some point you need to let go of the fear otherwise you only start buying when they are born.
I cannot be sure that everything is going to go alright in my pregnancy but living in fear of it being wrong is mentally a lot harder for me. I'd rather embrace the statistics that I will end up with a healthy baby than live in fear for the what if.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion I just think when it comes down to pregnancy we are so harsh. Don't tell anyone before 12 weeks because it can go wrong, don't buy anything before 20 weeks because what if. It's saddening and we can all use a bit more happiness.

Stillbirth can happen at 40 weeks pregnant. You can't live life like this. Otherwise you'd send husband pram shopping after baby is born and you made sure you keep him/her, not leave in the hospital for adoption.

firsttimelondonmummy · 23/01/2023 14:09

@Nadinya couldn’t have said it better myself 👏🏻👏🏻

Liveafr · 23/01/2023 14:24

I did most of the shopping in the second trimester and glad I didn't leave it too long. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 26 weeks, and it meant having extra appointments, extra scans, tests (blood glucose tests, weekly non-stress tests from 35 weeks) to fit into my schedule in addition to the regular appointments, antenatal classes; and also work and social life, which started to become a lot at a time I started to become more and more tired. I'm not sure I would have had the time and energy to go shopping in the third trimester.

Bellesjp · 23/01/2023 14:43

I bought one outfit at 16 weeks when we found out we were having a girl, then didn't buy anything until after 20 weeks because wanted to make sure everything was ok at the scan first

PoinsettiaPosturing · 23/01/2023 15:34

I had DC1 at 26 weeks and was bloody glad I'd done most of the shopping - one less thing to worry about
