Car accident pregnancy after effects!

Hi all,

I’m 24+6 looking for some advice from other mums as I want to make sure I’m doing the right thing!

A car crashed into the back of me 4 days ago, I went to hospital straight away and after scans and examinations was sent home and reassured all looked okay. Was back in hospital yesterday as I’ve been getting ongoing period pains and aches. Scanned and checked again as doctor was worried about early labour and the placenta. Doctor seemed happy all was okay and advised to rest. I am now back home and pain only seems to be bad when I am moving about but it’s manageable.

My question is when should I go back to work? (I’m a teacher). I will have had 5 days off and thought I could go back in Monday as the teacher guilt is strong! Some family and friends are saying I need to stay off and rest longer. I of course want to do what’s best for my baby but I also don’t want work to think I’m taking the mic!

This is my first pregnancy and I’m a huge worrier anyway! Any advise appreciated :)

Take longer off OP, don’t go back when you are still in pain, who cares what work think, it’s really not worth the risk.

If you're in pain moving about you need rest.

ReamsOfCheese · 21/01/2023 19:02

I'd go into work because I'd want to take my mind off stressing.

I definitely know the work guilt feeling but in this situation I'd stay home until I definitely felt better. You need to put yourself and baby first so please look after yourself.

I’d suggest not listening to anyone else and just do what you think is best.
I rear ended someone at 7 months pregnant, wrote my bloody car off. Called my midwife and she said that as long as I could feel the baby kicking to go home and she’d come and see me in the afternoon. She came, did some quick checks but gave me a clean bill of health to do as I pleased after that. Aches and pains and niggles are common both after an accident and during pregnancy - only you know if you feel this is more than that. You’ve been checked over in hospital twice for reassurance that you and baby are okay which is good.
What do you feel is best for you?

You could also have pain from the accident that is nothing to do with the pregnancy. Whiplash, for example, or hip pain from the seatbelt. You need to recuperate for yourself, as well as for the baby. If you are in pain you need to rest and gently mobilise.

(Totally get the teacher guilt. Am in a similar line and usually end up returning to work sooner than is sensible. And then I pay the price of pain or exhaustion lasting longer than it should have.)

DEFINITELY rest. I was advised to rest at one point during pregnancy before an international move. I didn't because I had a toddler and an international move. I ended up on 3 months of bed rest. I could sit rather than lie, but feet had to be up. Allowed to move 30 mins per day.

DO NOT RISK THAT!!

Rest, properly, then enjoy your job, colleagues, children and rest of your pregnancy. Being stuck at home, worrying that any extra movement (including getting up to go to the loo) could start an early labour, while have virtually no social contact, REALLY isn't what you want, I promise you!

Rest. Rest. Rest.

PloddingAlongHere · 22/01/2023 16:19

Totally undertand the guilt, I am a teacher and you should absolutly have longer off. Going back before you have healed will only result in you struggling as you wint have recovered properly. You know this though as you will have gone back ti early every illness you have ever had, this is not the same as that! Stay off

Grumpybutfunny · 22/01/2023 16:25

I think it depends on the degree of the pain some aches and pains are normal at that stage of pregnancy (and after I'm afraid). I'd possibly take tomorrow off then ring your midwife to ask her opinion. It seems the doctor has ruled out serious issues.

goldennotyetoldie · 22/01/2023 18:05

When you are pregnant your ligaments soften so it's easier to get injured. That might explain the pain. It can take longer to get better too.

Take the time you need. Work will cope. If you're not fully recovered in a few days, get the dr to check you out again.

Don't go back to work!!!! Rest and take it easy, your body is working hard anyway during pregnancy.. the stress of an accident wouldn't of helped, please don't add further stress of work. You will be fine OP but you need to look after yourself ☺️
