Persistent thrush

Hi everyone, I’m having non stop cases of thrush and it’s getting me down. My doctor will only prescribe cream in pregnancy and it isn’t relieving any itching or burning the way a pessary did prior to pregnancy. I don’t eat sugary food or drinks which I know can increase the chances of thrush, I wear cotton underwear etc all the recommendations to avoid thrush. I’ve been tested for everything else which came back negative. Can anyone advise me what they did that helped? Tia

I've had thrush for probably half my pregnancy and I'm 38+3 now :( I don't have any symptoms so I expect the swabs to come back clear but they don't, often moderate or heavy growth. My GP prescribes the pessaries, 1 straight away and 1 in 7 days so I've done loads. At one point they prescribed econazole pessary instead of clotrimazole which was one a day for 7 days and my swab after that came back scanty growth so the best I've had but a week later was back. I also was prescribed the tablet fluconazole once in the 3rd trimester (is not to be given in the 1st/care needs to be taken before it's considered at any point). I'm waiting for the results of my latest swab and I've been making lots of effort to hope it comes back clear, probiotics, no sugar, partner treated, underwear/sheets/towels/bedding washed at 60 degrees so we'll see!

You can take the pessaries or internal cream when pregnant, just not the tablets. Pharmacies probably won't sell to you if you're obviously pregnant (not sure how far you are) but you can buy off the shelf in supermarket. I've started taking probiotics from Holland and Barrett which seem to keep it at bay once it's been treated x

you can absolutely use the peasant in pregnancy - i was told just to be careful not to insert it too far up. If i were you i'd get someone to go to the pharmacy and buy the pessary for you (just get them to lie about being pregnant) and use it. That or go back to the GP and demand the pessary!!

argh auto correct - * pessary not peasant!!

You can also buy the pessaries on Amazon so you dont have to deal with the Pharmacy turning you down.

I have been having the same issue, early on i went to the pharmacy and they refused to let me buy any cream because i was pregnant… even though they said it was completely fine to use in pregnancy! They told me to go to the dr to get it prescribed and the worst part is that they prescribed me the same thing i was trying to buy!

The only reason i didnt get it on Amazon like everything else is because i only wanted the cream and i cannot find the cream sold alone there and couldnt even find it in the pharmacy in the past but they had it this time but just wouldnt let me buy it!

im now at the point where im wondering if i should get swabbed so they can give me something that will help better or just go and buy the pessaries.

But yeah if its the pessaries your looking for, Amazon sell them and different forms of pessaries and combos. If not get someone else (bf/husband maybe) to go to the pharmacy for you.

I needed something for constipation and knew they wouldnt give it to me so got my gf to go there and buy it instead! But when i show up or if they know im pregnant all of a sudden i cant have anything😤

My consultant prescribed me the tablets as nothing else was helping after a nasty infection. She made a note to the hospital pharmacy who prescribed it with no issue.

You can buy the canestan internal cream 10% strength on Amazon. It’s a pre filled applicator type thing. Might be worth asking if you could have that.

I had what I thought was persistent thrush through my entire first pregnancy... swab for strep b was positive at 36 weeks.. every other country check for this as protocol during pregnancy, other than UK. Make sure you are checked for this xxx

Thank you everyone I didn’t realise I was allowed pessaries! Hadn’t thought of strep b either so thank you

It might be that you have a yeast that is resistant to clotrimazole. It could also be hormonal, BV or other infection. Please insist that they do a swab the next time you see the midwife to find out. This should also show up strep B or any other nasties and should put your mind at rest. Be sure to state this has been a persistent infection. Good luck with the baby

Not sure if anyone has already said this but if you’re having sex you’ll need to treat both of you for thrush at the same time or you’re just passing it back and forth between you.
